A Roundtable to discuss the NHRI appointments and the process of its formation and the subsequent steps

The consociational system as well as kinship-based politics have not allowed circulation of political elites, limiting the entry and participation of newcomers and women to the political scene in Lebanon. The 2018 Lebanese parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on 6 May after nearly a decade since the last time they were held.

This talk hinges on the centrality of the labour movement in the political and economic struggle for change despite structural changes in the global economy hampering the activity and scope of associational power.

The Centre for Lebanese Studies and A. Planning and commencing field research can be a daunting prospect, often filled with ambiguity and lacking in structure. This workshop aims to demystify the research process, from conceptualising a topic to making initial phone calls and conducting interviews. It will leave participants more confident to tackle the challenges with which even experienced field researchers sometimes struggle.

1. Factors of radicalization and the responses of the Lebanese and the Canadian governments in that respect;

2. The question of refugees in Lebanon and the anti-Syrian sentiment as a factor of radicalization;

3. Impacts of programming designed to counter radicalization and improve social cohesion in Lebanon.

This conference will also encourage fruitful exchanges on this global issue and foster cooperation between academics, policy-makers and NGOs.
