The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has reached levels that exceed the severity of the 2006 war, with ongoing hostilities resulting in a toll of 2,867 deaths (including 178 children and 560 women killed) and over 13,000 injuries since 8 October 2023, according to national authorities.

In September, Israel launched a barrage of airstrikes against Lebanon, marking the deadliest day since the country’s 2006 war. In recent weeks, the conflict has escalated, with strikes mainly hitting the southern part of the country and parts of Beirut, the capital. Millions are in need as winter approaches and the hostilities threaten more lives.

We spoke with our Country Director for Lebanon, Suzanne Takkenberg, about the conflict and our emergency response.

Since October 8, 2023, Lebanon has experienced an increase of conflict which deepened on September 23, 2024: strong bombardments, airstrikes and ground invasion, caused numerous casualties and significant displacements, particularly in Beirut, the southern and eastern regions, and lately also the northern areas.

Concern Worldwide has warned that temperatures can drop to below freezing in the winter months in north Lebanon where some of the over 1.2 million displaced people have fled.

The Humanitarian Country Team in Lebanon, led by the Humanitarian Coordinator and supplementing national efforts, continues to respond to the humanitarian needs of the people affected by the increase in hostilities in Lebanon.

Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country.

On the afternoon of 17 September, despite the chaos that ensued following the explosion of pagers that resulted in over 3000 severe injuries, emergency rooms in Beirut’s hospitals functioned seamlessly.

On October 29, 2024, UNIFIL delivered essential humanitarian aid to the Municipality of Tyre amid a challenging situation in south Lebanon. The donation included much-needed medical devices and medicines provided by two Italian donors, Banco Farmaceutico and the NGO Live to Love.

Human Rights Watch documented three attacks, involving apparent war crimes, in which Israeli forces unlawfully struck medical personnel, transports, and facilities, including paramedics at a civil defense center in central Beirut on October 3, 2024, and an ambulance and a hospital in southern Lebanon on October 4, killing 14 paramedics.

More than 11,000 pregnant women have been impacted by the escalated bombardment of Lebanon. Some 1,300 of them are expected to give birth in the next month, even as an estimated one quarter of the country’s infrastructure has been destroyed.
