Since 8 October 2023, daily exchange of fire between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon has significantly intensified, characterized by large-scale displacement and loss of civilian life and causalities, damage to infrastructure, destruction of agricultural land and livestock, and the disruption of basic services including healthcare centers, water facilities, and schools in Lebanon.

As the conflict intensifies and humanitarian needs rise, WFP scaled-up its emergency response, to reach 420,000 people across shelters and communities since 23 September, in addition to its regular programmes.

The Humanitarian Country Team in Lebanon, led by the Humanitarian Coordinator and supplementing national efforts, continues to respond to the humanitarian needs of the people affected by the increase in hostilities in Lebanon.

On 23 September, after nearly one year of cross-border attacks along Lebanon's southern border, Israel escalated its bombardment of Lebanon, causing waves of mass displacement that have surpassed the country's ability to provide adequate shelter.

At the end of the month, the situation remains extremely tense, with ongoing Israeli attacks targeting cities and villages across Lebanon. Since the conflict began, 178 paramedics have lost their lives, 279 have been injured, and 246 emergency vehicles have been targeted.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has reached levels that exceed the severity of the 2006 war, with ongoing hostilities resulting in a toll of 2,867 deaths (including 178 children and 560 women killed) and over 13,000 injuries since 8 October 2023, according to national authorities.

In September, Israel launched a barrage of airstrikes against Lebanon, marking the deadliest day since the country’s 2006 war. In recent weeks, the conflict has escalated, with strikes mainly hitting the southern part of the country and parts of Beirut, the capital. Millions are in need as winter approaches and the hostilities threaten more lives.
