The first session of this webinar cycle will present and discuss the research of Dr. Leyla Dakhli on the “Bread Riots” that broke out in Tunisia on 28 December 1983, in the wake of World Bank-sponsored programmes. This movement lasted barely ten days, yet cost the lives of over one hundred people. The research explains how the inhabitants in popular neighborhoods reacted to the establishment of a new form of welfare state that was more concerned with fighting poverty – or fighting the poor – than with equalizing conditions or offering the same opportunities for everyone. By bringing back the social question at the center of the analysis, this third seminar aims at providing an overview of the old and new social tensions that are currently crossing the Tunisian and Egyptian societies. In so doing, the webinar seeks to challenge the dominant dichotomic success/failure approaches with which the post-Uprising historical development of the region has been understood.
