The first session of this webinar cycle will present and discuss the research of Dr. Leyla Dakhli on the “Bread Riots” that broke out in Tunisia on 28 December 1983, in the wake of World Bank-sponsored programmes. This movement lasted barely ten days, yet cost the lives of over one hundred people. The research explains how the inhabitants in popular neighborhoods reacted to the establishment of a new form of welfare state that was more concerned with fighting poverty – or fighting the poor – than with equalizing conditions or offering the same opportunities for everyone.
