Those working for this independent Organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations. MdM currently works in 44 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction associated with drug use, emergencies and crisis.
Current MdM’s program in Iraq-KRI is to support access to health care in Dohuk, Ninewah and Kirkuk governorates with a focus on IDPs.
The mental health team is composed of 1 Coordinator, 1 supervisor in each of the field bases and 10 mental health workers divided equally. Additionally, we are in the process of recruiting social workers to enable a more comprehensive provision of MHPSS services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The MHPSS trainer will provide training and support to the MdM MHPSS team in addition to other MdM PHC personnel. The purpose of this position is to ensure sustainable improvement to the quality of MHPSS services and allow for expansion of activities of the Iraq MHPSS program. The MHPSS trainer will strengthen the quality of MHPSS services provided by MDM MHPSS team and build the capacity of MHPSS team and other MdM PHC personnel concerned to better meet the mental health needs of beneficiaries. Activities include assessment, training, supervision, on the job mentoring in addition to developing tools and material.
The MHPSS trainer will work under the responsibility of the of Mental Health Coordinator.
More specifically the responsibilities are :
1. Training & Capacity Building:
Train psychosocial workers to deliver MHPSS evidence based interventions that alleviate psychological and emotional distress (i.e. CBT, IPT, PM+).
Build the capacity of PSS staff in promoting and strengthening community psychosocial support skills.
Facilitate the training and supervision of selected PHC medical and non-medical staff in the proper identification and basic management of common mental health disorders (mhGap, PFA, etc.)
Train PSS and PHC staff on identifying and providing tailored MHPSS services to vulnerable and/or at risk groups (children, elderly, GBV survivors, war injured etc.)
Adapt training sessions to accommodate MdM staff schedules and logistical constraints
Continually assess development of MHPSS staff and adapt training to accommodate for their different needs and levels.
2. Support & Supervision:
Provide ongoing support and supervision to psychosocial workers and selected PHC staff to enhance practice and optimize outcomes for MHPSS beneficiaries accessing MdM services.
Address issues related to ethical, professional considerations and best practices through group and/or individual supervision sessions.
Promote self-care and staff-care practices and processes
Designing of Training Curricula & Needed Tools
In collaboration with the MH Coordinator and Technical Supervisor, develop training curriculum and implementation schedule
Prepare/develop training material necessary such as power point presentation, handouts, pre and post tests, etc.
Support the development of effective clinical policies, practices and tools when required.
4. Monitoring & Evaluation
In collaboration with the Mental Health Coordinator, train MHPSS team on validated MHPSS measurements to be utilized on the field for proper assessment and evaluation of treatment (WHO-5, DASS, ect.)
Train on and ensure that all necessary MHPSS beneficiary forms and files (intake forms, progress reports, individual assessments etc.) are properly completed and stored as per MdM protocols.
Evaluate beneficiaries’ satisfaction and quality of care provided through the interventions trained on.
Reporting:
Ongoing training needs assessment, update on internal trainings of all MHPSS staff.
Feedback from monitoring and training sessions, both by coordination team and field staff.
Recommendations for future capacity building plan
Responsible for compiling reports on delivered training activities and progress of the team to be submitted to the Mental Health Coordinator.
Continuously debrief with MH Coordinator, MH supervisors.
PROFIL
Advanced degree (Master’s degree, PhD or equivalent) in clinical psychology or psychiatry but with a strong background in clinical counseling.
Strong clinical and humanitarian field experiences in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
Well versed in implementation and capacity building of MH teams on evidence based mental health approaches such as CBT, IPT etc.
At least 2 years of experience providing training on MHPSS topics for persons with different professional backgrounds and knowledge levels.
Experience working in a multi – disciplinary team (PHC/hospital)
Strong communication skills.
Well organized.
Fluent in English and Arabic (oral and written).
Experience conducting program needs assessments, program development, program evaluations and reporting.
Knowledge and experience with case management services
Flexibility, adaptability, diplomacy and self-sufficiency.
Understanding of and extensive experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered displacement and trauma.
Understanding of and experience developing curricula and providing training for mental health staff on counseling approaches, sensitization on the effects of trauma and conflict, and designing interventions.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
