Medical Pediatric Surgeon

REPORTS TO (HIERARCHICAL) Project Medical Referent   REPORTS TO (FUNCTIONAL) Project Medical Referent Medical Department Surgeon Advisor   JOB FAMILY Medical & Paramedical   MAIN PURPOSE Organize & carry our surgery activities for pediatric patients under 15 years if age at Elias El Hrawi Governmental Hospital in the surgery unit. Participating in the pre, intra and post-surgery evaluation, surgery recovery, and the discharge of the patient from the surgical unit, surgical pharmaceutical needs in coordination with OT supervisor, according to MSF policies, protocols & universal hygiene standards, in close collaboration with the pediatric anesthetist & other medical staff, to ensure the quality of care provided to pediatric patients.   ACCOUNTABILITIES          ·            Carry out pre-operative consultations by evaluating the risks of surgical interventions & the presence of coexisting disease. Providing the patient & his/her family or care takers with appropriate information about the risks and benefits of the type of procedures to be used, and obtaining their written informed consent, in order to ensure the best conditions for surgery.          ·            Carry out age-surgery care for patient under 15 years and related activities to ensure safe and adequate procedure.          ·            Ensure, respect and promote medical confidentiality of patients and their families.          ·            Ensure good functioning & maintenance of the surgery and participate in clinical rounds with the medical pediatric & pediatric anesthetist.          ·            Carry out a detailed operative report          ·            Discussing treatment plan with the appropriate members of the medical team at least once or twice on daily basis. Renew orders & ensure they are carried out. Evaluate the patient’s systematically in order to modify plans and/or therapies for their relief.          ·            Following up the progress of the post-operative patients, consultations & examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors – and updating the patient’s family or the progress.          ·            Advise, as needed or support other staff on postoperative care in the wards concerning fluid management, oxygenation & airway maintenance, cardiovascular homeostasis, chest physiotherapy and mobilization, with special focus on patient pain relief during the entire hospitalization.          ·            Carry our administrative procedures & documentation (timely & legible charting in the patient medical record, completion of forms, statistics, database management, etc) in order to have updated & accurate information about the surgery care provided and the day-to-day activities of the project.          ·            Respond to requests for surgery support in the pediatric ward as needed and participate in any emergency activity.          ·            In collaboration with the pediatric anesthetist, carry out quantitative surgical-anesthesia data collection, complete and submit reports for the monthly follow-up of perioperative mortality, and for the quality of pain management, and inform immediately the direct supervisor in the event of medical error. Participate in quality improvement activities (morbidity & mortality services).          ·            As an expert in pediatric surgery, proposing strategy and implementing them after validation of operation and pediatric surgery advisor. Plan the training of the related staff under his/her direct supervision.          ·            Support on-going o the pediatric team in order to optimize quality of care. Reviewing and discussing selected complicated cases or mistakes and giving technical input.
