Engineer for water channeling design
I. INTRODUCTION
Project Background Information
The Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI) is a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the United States Forest Service (USFS) that provides technical assistance and institutional support for sustainable native tree reforestation and wildfire management in support of community stability and social cohesion. With administrative offices in Beirut, LRI technical experts manage a multi-year work program of activities throughout Lebanon in collaboration with grassroots organizations and local communities. One of the components of this project works on increasing local community resilience to climate change on sites at high risk of erosion and land sliding, following a participatory approach.
Engineer for water channeling
LRI has started its work on resilience of communities to Climate Change in two sites, Bkassine and Mhaidseh. The assessment conducted in both sites revealed the need for small terraces in Mhaidseh and for water channeling of a spring water that is currently causing land sliding in Bkassine. For this purpose, LRI is seeking the expertise of a civil engineer with a background in Hydraulics and Hydrology, as well as structural designs of water channels and terraces, to help in designing the work needed in both sites.
II. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
LRI seeks a civil engineer for a short-term consultancy.
The Consultant is expected to perform the following duties:
Conduct field visits to assess the current status of both sites and take measurements
Conduct a detailed survey of the area upstream of the project area in Bkassine to be able to design a water channeling system that has no negative impacts on the rest of the forest.
Plan and design the terraces needed for Mhaidseh and the water channels for Bkassine, using as much as possible natural material and environmentally-friendly procedures
Submit the design with a narrative report, maps, a detailed implementation plan and an environmental assessment of impact.
Supervise implementation of activities in Bkassine and Mhaidseh
III. EXPECTED DELIVERABLES TIMEFRAME
In close coordination with the LRI’s Project Director, the expert is expected to conduct and deliver the tasks mentioned above by the end of May 2017.
