Most of the staff members are refugees themselves, working directly to benefit their communities – as teachers, doctors, nurses or social workers. Environmentalist Specialist (Energy, Air, Soil, Climate) Location Lebanon Field Office Type of Appointment Contractor Deadline for Application 14/04/2016 Vacancy Announcement Number 995/2016 Department/Division FICIP   MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES In accordance with established Agency policy and procedures, and under the guidance of the Chief Infrastructure and Camp Improvement Programme, the incumbent will:   Collect, detail and evaluate the Energy, Air, Soil/Land and Climate data, through regular visits to the camps; Map the Energy, Air, Soil/Land and Climate fields and identify potential relevant partners to UNRWA EH strategy; Liaise with the other members of the EH team, including WASH expert, hydrogeologist, solid waste specialist and GIS officer; Develop energy, air, soil/land, and climate technical guidelines and standards for the Palestinian Camps compatible with the national standards (integrated approach); Develop and contribute to the Capacity Building Programme of UNRWA personnel, including trainings materials and identification of potential relevant partners; Evaluate and map major risks of Air and Soil/land pollution inside and immediate proximity of the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon; Organize and implement one-week technical workshop for UNRWA personnel on environmental health hazards focusing on water and carbon cycles and on findings on Energy, Air, Soil/Land and Climate fields adapted to the EH strategy ; Participate in internal and external meetings and trainings organized by the EHD team and/or as may be required by supervisor; Prepare and submit cost estimates as may be required by supervisor; Prepare needs assessment with relevant action plans and activities; Prepare monthly reports and/or as may be directed by supervisor. Energy Collect, summarize and evaluate all energy sources related to the EH infrastructures in the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon (in close collaboration with the EH team); Evaluate and develop possible renewable energies projects / initiatives  adapted to the EH infrastructures and services inside the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon; Evaluate and propose innovative solutions based on green energy development principles within the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon; Collect and analyse energy running costs related to the water, sanitation and other sectors of the EH Strategy; Prepare action plan /timeline  with needs assessment and specific activities.   Air, Soil/land, Climate Identify and develop a systematic air and climate data collection to be used in a simple and sustainable manner within the EH Strategy; Conduct and map an Air quality survey in the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon with the identification of the most problematic sites and sources of nuisances/pollution; Map the surface profile inside the 12 Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon (topography and soil characteristic – paved, roofed, natural) by using satellite pictures (in collaboration with the GIS officer) to  improve the EH Strategy efficiency (artificial recharge, local infiltration of rains, categories and size of the existing alleyways) and Disaster Risk Reduction plan;   PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES (A)   Academic and Professional             Advanced university degree in environmental technologies related to water, sanitation, energy or air fields.   (B)   Experience   Minimum 3 years of progressively professional work experience at national or international levels in fields relevant to environmental management; Strong experience in electro-mechanical field related to energy efficiency for water and other environmental domains; Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an asset.   (C)   Language   Fluency in English and Arabic is required French is an asset.   (D)   Skills and Competencies   Able to work under pressure Able to work in a team Independent Good knowledge of Lebanon natural resources Good negotiating and alliance building skill. Good knowledge of key global/ regional development.   DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Microsoft (word, excel, etc.) Electricity and renewable energies softwares Climate data, meteo stations software Air quality laboratory (use and diagnostic) Drivng licence       CONDITIONS OF SERVICE Based in the Environmental Health Division (EHD) of the FICIP department of Lebanon Field Office (LFO) in Beirut (Bir Hassan) Frequent field visit (weekly basis) Salary: As per relevant salary scale.
