Communications Officer

Etana is a medium-sized Syrian NGO that has been founded in Damascus in 2001. Its vision is of a Syria where all citizens, regardless of family, religious or ethnic background, are free to participate in the social and political affairs of their community and country. It is Etana's belief that an active citizenry is the foundation of a vibrant democracy and the best guarantee of freedom and equality for all. To promote this vision, Etana is engaged in a set of diverse activities: developing the capacity of activists and local leaders; facilitating platforms for free discussion and debate; and research, documentation and advocacy. Only through an informed citizenry will a stable and prosperous Syria be a reality. Reporting to: Director Role purpose: Working within the Beirut-based admin team of Etana, the Communications Officer will work closely with the Operations Manager and the Program Coordinator, ensuring efficient communication within the team as well as with partners and the public. Key responsibilities and results: Develops and implements a well thought out communications strategy to raise awareness about Etana’s work and the Syrian conflict Improves Etana’s website in cooperation with the web designer Maintains and updates the Arabic and English side of the website Expands the website's audience by developing and implementing a targeted social media strategy Maintains and updates Etana’s social media accounts in both Arabic and English Maintains a photo and video database of Etana’s activities Monitors media coverage of the Syrian conflict Shares accurate coverage with Etana’s team, stakeholders and the public Identifies opportunities to share and disseminate valuable information about the situation in Syria Coordinates the contact with all media outlets Ensures a high standard for the layout of Etana Files and other publications by coordinating with both the graphic designer and the project staff Ensures proper translation of all Etana Files, reports and papers from Arabic to English by coordinating with the translator and occasionally translating short texts Ensures efficient internal communication Provides input for Etana’s overall programmatic strategy Requirements: Excellent Arabic and English communication skills Bachelor’s degree in communications, social sciences or related field Solid understanding of the Syrian conflict Commitment to Etana’s mission and goals 1-2 years of relevant work experience Experience with social media and websites is an advantage Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility and motivation Qualified candidates are invited to email a CV and cover letter to vacancy@etanasyria.org.
