Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in 1971.
Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters.
MSF in Lebanon currently has 3 projects mainly on primary health care and mental health, in Saida, Tripoli and the Bekaa valley.
Function responsibilities:
I- Medical activities:
Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnosis and prevention (helped by clinical examination, laboratory results and exams available)
If necessary prescribe relevant treatment according to MSF guidelines and protocols
Ensure a medical follow-up of quality and if necessary (and possible) refer to other health facilities
Apply hygiene standards in all medical activities
Keep informed the patient and his family about any development
Collaborate with nurses and team supervisor in indicating the needs in medical equipment and drugs
Prescribe drugs according to MSF-Lebanon standard list
II- Pharmacy and medical equipment management:
Has an obligation to report stock ruptures in pharmacy;
Prescribe in rational manner and consider 2nd lines of treatments
Has an obligation to contribute and monitor the quality of the desinfection and sterilization process of the material and medical equipment
Is in charge of new needs identification, in terms of drugs and medical equipments, in line with pathologies met in his/her medical practice
III- Organisation and team management:
Organise and work in collaboration with other departments
Refer defaulters and vulnerable patients to the social worker to do the home visits and follow up
Refer patients who need services not provided by MSF structure to the social worker to find a proper referral structure
Motivate and train a multidisciplinary health team and more particularly staff carrying out medical activities (formal and informal training) when needed
Could propose protocols and guideline for medical activities if doesn’t exist (after validation by the technical referent)
IV- Monitoring, analysis and reporting:
Participate in the development of the plan of action
Monitor the medical activities with a public health approach and make propositions of possible evolution if necessary
Collect data about morbidities and submit them on daily/wekly/monthly or any other basis when requested.
Report immediately to the technical referent any problem arising in the service, especially the loss/ robbery/damage of medical equipment or medicines.
