Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters.
I- Function responsibilities:
a- Mental health activities:
With a strong sense of neutrality and confidentiality
Evaluate the psychological needs of the patient
Diagnose any psychiatric or psychological disorder
Define the best response (treatment and strategy) to answer these psychological needs
Refer patients to a medical doctor (preferably a psychiatrist) if chemotherapy is needed
Carry out psychological care (psychological support or psychotherapy) according to MSF protocols (they will be published soon).
b- Coordination and training:
Coordinate a mental health project or mental aspects of a project
Increase awarness and traine health structures staff to the “triage” and reference of patients to the relevant health professional when necessary
c- Public relation: Set up, maintain and work with a mental health community network.
d- Monitoring, analysis and reporting:
Participate in the development of the plan of action
Actively monitor and report mental health activities (correctly fill registers, statistics and produce reports). Propose analyse of these statistics.
Report immediately all important information linked to the clinical psychologist activities that should be communicate to the hierarchy.
II- Specific Activities Linked to Context:
-The psychologist is responsible to sensibilise staff and community members (through the community team) to mental health issues and must be pro-active in ensure mental health is an integrated primary health care service.
-The psychologist must have completed psychotherapeutic specialisation
-All staff are expected to maintain good relationships with specialist centres, referral centres, local organisations and the community in order to contribute to the effectiveness of the project
-The psychologist may be required to carry out visits to the patients home for assessment or care to the community for education.
