You are invited to an open (and free) discussion on Developing a National Committee or Forum on Volunteering, and a National Coordinating Committee for Global Youth Service Days on Thursday, May 22 at 6-8 pm at AltCity.
Dr. Patricia Nabti, Director of the Learning to CARE Institute and Regional Representative of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE), will present her ideas on the need to establish better coordination in Lebanon among volunteers and the NGOs, service, institutions, municipalities, ministries, and special events that engage volunteers. Issues to consider:
Do we need a national volunteer center? And if so, who would organize it? What services would it provide?
Do we need an online portal for volunteering in Lebanon?
Is there interest in holding monthly sharing sessions where different organizations share information about their volunteer programs (maybe 3-4 each session)? And where could it be held?
Can we more actively promote volunteering of youth, the elderly, and those with disabilities in Lebanon?
Can we more actively promote corporate volunteering in Lebanon?
Can we provide a certification and recognition program for volunteers that would assure us of having better volunteers and provide a way to honor them at the national level?
How does all this relate to the mandatory school requirement recently imposed by the Ministry of Education, and the ongoing mandatory school service programs that have been in existence in many private schools for many years?
And can we develop a national coordinating committee for Global Youth Service Days (www.gysd.org) and even develop it into National Youth Service Days or National Youth Service Week?
Are there other international service programs/events/celebrations that Lebanon can more actively participate in?
Any one of these questions could be the focus of a two hour session, but let us begin. And participants will be invited to join an informal committee to coordinate the continuation of the discussion.
The session will be in English, though interventions in Arabic will be welcome. Space is limited, so it would be helpful if you would register if you plan to attend.
Workshops on Volunteering: You may also be interested in attending one or more of the volunteer-related training workshops that will be given on May 26 and 27. For more information click here.
