Première Urgence – Aide Médicale Internationale (PU-AMI) is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO). The INGO’s objective is to bring a global response to the basic needs of populations suffering from acute humanitarian crisis, to allow them to recover and lead them to autonomy and dignity.
PU-AMI’s involvement in the Syrian Crisis is strong, with a wide range of programs implemented in most of the countries affected by the conflict (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Irak).
In Lebanon, PU-AMI intervenes in several sectors: shelter and rehabilitation, infrastructure, WASH, food security and livelihoods, health, IS/CS management and protection, and education and psychosocial activities in three regions, namely the Akkar district in North Governorate, Beirut and Mount Lebanon Governorates, and Saida and Jezzine districts in the South Governorate.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Vulnerability of Syrian refugees in Akkar has increased due to the protraction of the crisis, poor socioeconomic conditions, limited skills and capacities, legal livelihood constraints, and gaps in overall assistance.
Unemployment and poverty among the Lebanese host community in Akkar has been exacerbated by the influx of refugees in an already neglected and under developed area, with crucial needs in term of public services and infrastructure. This situation impacts both demographics in term of food security, protection and health, with many unable to access goods and services, along with resorting to negative coping mechanisms (selling of assets, reduction of dietary diversification, child labor, early marriage, etc.). Therefore the objective of this PU-AMI livelihood project is to decrease socioeconomic vulnerability of female Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese in Akkar through providing Food for Training (FFT) opportunities to support short term food needs and improve income generating skills.
