Institute for War & Peace Reporting is an independent not-for profit organisation that works
with media and civil society to promote positive change in conflict zones, closed societies, and
countries in transition around the world. Under the project entitled Alternative Voices for
Syria, which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IWPR works with Syrian
reporters, bloggers and activists to support freedom of expression and Human Rights. The
work focuses on empowering women in rural areas, supporting advocacy campaigns and
providing trainings on Digital Security, Advocacy and Conflict-Sensitive Journalism.
In that Regard, IWPR seeks a consultant to lead on facilitating the annual Women’s
Advocacy Tour in the U.S. that aims to promote the work and views of four prominent
female Civil Society Organization (CSO) leaders. The tour will highlight the role of women in
Syria today, both as victims and as leaders, performing important roles in their communities
as the leaders of CSOs as they strive to reduce or minimize the impact of the conflict on their
communities. The candidate profiles also include a focus on women’s leadership in the
struggle for human rights, gender equity, reconciliation, and political, economic and social
justice, and the realities of life in the so-called liberated and/or inaccessible areas of the
country.
The consultant will be required to plan the events and coordinate meetings with prominent
media outlets and politicians. He/she will be responsible for all logistics and coordination of
the events in Washington DC and New York City.
Scope of Work:
a. Provide a detailed plan for the tour for both Washington D.C. and NYC (including dates
and costs)
b. Meet and follow-up with the IWPR office focal point in Washington DC & Department of
State for updates and recommendations
c. Organize meetings with IWPR Board members and the women’s candidates
d. Coordinate interviews with potential donors for IWPR & tour candidates
e. Reach out for interviews with media outlets (TV, Radio Stations, Newspapers) with the
candidates.
f. Organize public events with thinktanks, universities, Syrian organizations (if available)
and women’s candidates
g. Identify an English/Arabic interpretor and select one in coordination with IWPR
procurement department.
h. Organize logistics, transportation, hotel stays and potential venues in coordination with
IWPR procurement department.
i. Accompany the campaign team throughout all events and serve as focal point for all
logistical/coordination issues
j. Organize one event in NYC to include interviews with media outlets, potential donors
and a dinner including women’s candidates, IWPR board members and employees.
k. Provide final report with pictures, success stories and general recommendations to
IWPR
l. Other tasks as deemed necessary for the tour
Main Deliverables and Timeline
- Approval of detailed itinerary, tour dates, and costs - 14 days after signature of contract
- Booking confirmation of hotel, venues and meetings/interviews with prominent figures or organizations - 15th of August 2018
- Completion of events and provision of final report - October 20, 2018
*Timeline is subject to change once the dates of the events are more accurate. The event will take place in October 2018, but dates are not decided yet.
Payment Schedule
The consultant will send an invoice and payment will be made upon satisfactory completion of deliverables as per the contract.
Work relationships
- The consultant shall report to the Program Manager in the Beirut office.
- The consultant should work directly with the Program Associate and Program Coordinator in the Beirut office.
Qualifications
- University degree in hospitality, public relations, journalism, communication, social sciences, humanities, or related field
- At least seven (7) years of progressively advanced management in national or international level events
- Familiarity with government and organization structures in the United States of America
- Strong PR connections
- Ability to work in a diverse team
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is essential including the ability to draft at a professional level in this language
- Fluency in Arabic would be an asset
