The agency pursues its mission through emergency relief services, sustainable community development, civil society and economic development initiatives. Mercy Corps has been present in the Middle East since the 1980s and currently works in Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq.

 

Working in Lebanon since 1993, Mercy Corps has implemented community development programs focused on promoting economic development and increased opportunity for disadvantaged communities, while responding to emergencies as they emerged in the country. In 2012, the program portfolio shifted in response to the massive refugee influx from Syria and Mercy Corps in Lebanon has solidified its emergency response programming while integrating longer-term development programming by focusing on key sectors: Protection, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Governance and Conflict, and Livelihoods.

 

Mercy Corps is supporting both Lebanese host communities and Syrian refugee populations by developing and implementing innovative water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) solutions to increase access to reliable and safe water, improve water and sanitation facilities and raise awareness about safe hygiene practices. The WaSH program is integrated with Gender Based Violence, (GBV) and Cash for Work activities, to ensure a multi-sector assistance for the most vulnerable people.

 

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:


The GBV Case Worker provides direct support and case management to vulnerable women and girls as part of the GBV team in various locations in the Bekaa and South Governorate including:

  • Case management services located in Mercy Corps office and community-based safe spaces;
  • Emotional support groups in community-based safe spaces;
  • Psychosocial activities in community-based safe spaces.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The GBV case worker will be working to support the safe access of survivors of GBV to case management services and to available and specialized services, by:

  • Provide direct age-appropriate and specialized support and care to vulnerable women and girls through survivor centered approach, along with:
  • Age appropriate engagement and decision-making by survivors
  • Do No Harm analysis
  • Provide survivor centered case management.  Case management services include:
  • Basic counseling and psychosocial support
  • Assessment of needs and resources
  • Developing safety and action plan
  • Implementing the plan
  • Appropriate follow-up and referrals
  • Case closure (if and when appropriate)
  • Organize, facilitate, and monitor psychosocial activities, including emotional support groups in community-based safe spaces;
  • Mobilize and register participants;
  • Facilitate structured group sessions using available guidance;
  • Liaise with services providers to support the access of survivors of GBV to available and specialized services (including: updates referral pathway); follow up with GBV survivors to ensure their safe and confidential access to the service;
  • Facilitate mid-point and final group evaluations for monitoring and reporting;
  • Monitoring & Reporting;
  • Safe and confidential documentation for case management forms;
  • Complete the case management quality assessment tool on monthly basis;
  • Support tracking of beneficiaries using agreed M&E tools;
  • Participate in weekly reporting and planning meetings to ensure adherence to standards of care, quality case management, and reporting requirements are followed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop Mercy Corps programs.

Accountability to Beneficiaries: Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, M&E of our field projects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY:


REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Senior GBV Coordinator
SUPERVISES: N/A
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: GBV, BPRM, and M&E, programs, Operations and Finance teams and sector agencies.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 1 year of counseling experience with issues relating to violence against women and girls, gender and development, child protection or social change;
  • Clear understanding of gender inequality, and issues surrounding violence against women and girls.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for clients at all times essential;
  • Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, work overtime when necessary and be able to coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail;
  • Positive, respectful attitude and collaborative approach to problem solving;
  • Demonstrated attention to detail; ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work as a member of a team essential.
  • Fluency in Arabic required
  • Protection-related programs experience preferred;
  • Gender-based Violence programs experience preferred;
  • Strong understanding of GBV in emergency context;
  • Excellent understanding on GBV prevention
  • Good understanding of GBV case management;
  • Excellent communications skills, with good understanding of relevant cross-cultural issues and ability to work with refugee and host community populations;
  • Written and oral communication skills in English preferred;
