Child Protection Adviser - Humanitarian Surge Team

"This Role can be based anywhere"

ROLE PURPOSE:    

As part of our humanitarian ambition and 2030 global strategy, Save the Children is developing and implementing a new Surge Capacity Model to further improve the efficient deployment of high quality surge staff to support the delivery of our Humanitarian Responses directly and in collaboration with SCI partners.  The model will be a stimulus for other areas of the organization, demonstrating more collaborative and cost effective ways of working to drive resources closer to children and honor our commitments to sector wide developments including the Grand Bargain and Core Humanitarian Standard. 

The post holder will provide dedicated surge support for all categories of humanitarian response efforts, interim cover for critical roles and capacity building to country and regional office staff and SCI partners within humanitarian contexts around the globe.  When not on deployment the post holder will undertake work at the base location agreed with their Subject Matter Advisor and Deployment Manager and contribute to the further development of the surge capacity model. 

The role will responsible and accountable for the provision of Child Protection support within Humanitarian Responses. He/she will provide ongoing support to develop best practice.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

• Significant management experience in humanitarian work in child protection
• Extensive experience in building strong child protection systems and in delivering services to children in emergencies
• Ability to identify the gaps in child protection in the given context to inform a holistic response for children
• Strong technical understanding of child protection, child participation, case management and community-based approaches
• Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability
• Demonstrable ability to perform at a senior programme, policy and strategy development level with strong advocacy and leadership skills
• Experience in working with a team and the ability to manage and motivate staff
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels, taking into account cultural and language difficulties.
• A strong understanding monitoring and evaluation processes and methodologies
• Experience in and commitment to capacity building of staff, partners and communities, with experience in designing and delivering training and in using participatory and consultative approaches
• Experience of preparing successful funding proposals for donors
• Experience in building relationships, fostering interagency coordination and experience of representing an organisation to external stakeholders.
• Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
• Ability to work both in an Advisory and a hands on implementation capacity
• Ability to work effectively in an insecure environment and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities
• The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
• Excellent analytical and report writing skills
• Strong communication (written and spoken) skills in English 
• Commitment to upholding Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding Policy, as well as principles of do no harm and confidentiality.
• A strong understanding of, and experience in applying, inter-agency standards and guidelines in child protection, including the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English, in addition to any of the following languages: Spanish, French and Arabic 

Desirable

• Experience or knowledge of working and living in relevant regions/contexts
• Specific experience of working in interagency projects
