Legal researcher – KAFA Anti-Trafficking Unit

KAFA’s Anti-trafficking Unit is seeking a short term consultancy to conduct a study and develop a report analyzing the judiciary verdicts regarding theft cases filed against migrant domestic workers in Lebanon. The study seeks to assess the trends in judiciary’s response to theft charges filed against migrant domestic workers by their sponsors once the former leaves their employers. The result of the study will be published in a report that aims at informing the work of the judiciary and relevant stakeholders on this regard. 

The applicant must be able to conduct the following duties:

  • Conduct  data  collection of relevant verdicts at different Lebanese tribunals;
  •  Design, with the guidance of Kafa, a research methodology that will support reaching the objective of the study;
  • Identify recurring theme in the verdicts and conduct an analysis of the results;
  • Identify gaps in the judiciary system related to theft cases against Migrant Domestic Workers and suggest realistic recommendations;
  • Draft a final reports on the results and findings of the study and prepare a policy brief gathering the main gaps and recommendations in relation to the studied topic.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or a higher degree in law, additional degrees in other fields (such as gender, migration, or human rights) are a big asset;
  • A minimum of 4 years of work experience in research, preferably in NGOs in relation to women’s rights, violence against women, migration, and refugees;
  • Proven experience in conducting legal research;
  • Good knowledge of gender issues and violence against women;
  • Good planning and time management skills;
  • Proactive and problem solving;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in both English and Arabic;
  • Ability to work under stress;
  • Committed to the principles of equality and non-discrimination.
