MAIN OBJECTIVE OF POSITION
Main purpose:
Organize and carry out surgical activities in children, ensuring the diagnosis, pre-, intra- and post-operative surgical care, in accordance with MSF policies, guidelines and protocols, following universal hygiene standards, and in close collaboration with medical and paramedical staff in the hospital services / units in order to improve patients’ health conditions. He is responsible to cooperate with other specialist involved in the paediatric patients’ care to determine whether surgery is the best option for the child and makes the best plan of management.
Accountabilities:
- Implement MSF standard operating procedures (e.g. antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment, post-operative pain management, post-exposure prophylaxis, etc.) and make recommendations (e.g. prevention of cross contamination as HIV, Tb, etc.) in order to minimize clinical risks.
- Perform pre-operative consultations to paediatric patients, evaluating the surgical risk in collaboration with the anaesthesiologist and/or other medical staff involved, and obtaining the parents’ signed informed consent to operate.
- Carry out urgent and planned surgical interventions following MSF standard operating procedures, including participating in swab counts, ensuring appropriate use of surgical equipment and material, and proper documentation of all surgical interventions.
- Carry out post-operative care, including ward rounds and outpatient consultations, in collaboration with the anaesthesiologist, other medical staff, ward staff and supervisors, to ensure compliance with MSF standard operating procedures, including the rational use of medicines. If needed, to coordinate patient referral.
- In collaboration with the anaesthesiologist and supervisors, carryout the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative surgical care data to monitor the performed activities, analysing clinical trends and commenting on adverse events / poor clinical outcome.
- Support organizing the surgical program, and together with the operating unit staff, monitor the use of equipment and material and advise on instruments needs.
- Participate in all organized hospital meetings and reviews (e.g. committees, mortality, etc.).
- Support the team with bedside trainings in order to ensure the required knowledge to improve the paediatric patient’s triage, assessment, diagnosing and early detection of warning signs.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Essential Medical Doctor with diploma in paediatric surgical specialty
- Licensed by the Ministry of Public Health of Lebanon and registered at the Order of Physicians.
Experience:
- 2 years of autonomous experience in paediatric surgery.
- Experience in wound management techniques (e.g. skin grafting, etc.)
- Experience in laparoscopic technique.
- Previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s is an asset
Languages:
- Fluency in Arabic and English is Mandatory
Knowledge:
- Essential Computer literacy
