In this role, you will provide support to the UNSPT chairperson with diverse tasks and varying levels of complexity.
- Research, assemble and interpret information related to Torture and ill treatment in places of deprivation of liberty and other related matters.
- Conduct legal analysis and provide advice on torture prevention documents.
- Produce draft policy papers related to the prevention of torture.
- Reviewing and commenting on legal instruments and practical tools and standards related to torture prevention.
- Provide support to the chair during technical assistance on preventative mechanisms
- Conduct regular in depth Reviews of state and National Preventive Mechanisms activities relating to the implementation of the UN-OPCAT
- Support the chairperson in preparing thematic conferences and meetings, and drafting of the annual reports to the Human Rights Council and General Assembly as well as all respective presentations.
- Prepare communications for the mandate-holder with individuals, relevant Stakeholders, other treaty bodies and UN agencies.
- Produce high quality written analysis in a diverse range of formats including, analytical documents, reports, briefing and interviews notes and speeches.
- Assist and document meeting preparation
- Manage the schedule and agenda to keep the Chairperson well informed on upcoming engagements and events.
- Undertake any other lawful tasks as may be assigned by the SPT chairperson

Minimum education, training and experience requirements to qualify for the position:
• University degree at master level in law ideally with a focus on human rights or International human rights law
• 3-5 years’ experience of working on human rights in a non-governmental or international organization, state or academic institutions, in national human rights institutions or NPMs
• Specific experience working on issues related to torture and ill-treatment and with UN human rights mechanisms.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and engage in political processes at national regional and international level.
• Fluency in English, French. Spanish is a plus.
• Excellent writing skills in English and French, including the ability to convey complex concepts and recommendations in a clear, concise style; ability to draft human rights documents.
• Strong coordination and inter-personal skills.
• Ability to assess and combine information from different sources.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in handling highly-sensitive and complex issues and problems.
