Translation Officer

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization that delivers impartial medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries.

MSF has been working continuously in Lebanon since 2008. Today our operational teams work all over the country delivering quality, free of charge medical care to those who need it.

 

MSF Lebanon Branch office is part of the MSF international movement. Our team is composed of 20 full time employees based in Beirut and Cairo working together in the areas of international field recruitment, communications and medical operational support.

From Lebanon and Egypt, we work regionally and contribute globally to MSF’s medical humanitarian response.

 

 

Main Purpose

Performing professional translation activities and delegated duties according to MSF’s, standards and lan-guage tools, in order to ensure a proper representation and translation of MSF activities and core values. The translator officer is part of the communication department of the MSF Lebanon office. 

 

Accountabilities

  • Performing professional written translation activities, ensuring that translation products meet MSF Lebanon’s language standards.
  • Support the Translation Unit Manager in the processing of translation activity of any department needs (upon validation of line manager)
  • Support in translating material to and from English and Arabic, including press and communications material, web-site and social media content, newsletter content.
  • Coordinate with the Multimedia Producer to Arabize MSF audio-visual materials.
  • Provide coherent translation for scripts, editing and proof-reading, final production quality assurance and adaptation.
  • Develop the translation memory: The TS will regularly use the CAT tool, feeding the Translation Memory and Termbases.
  • Support in maintaining and developing the Arabic MSF style, tone and terminology guidelines.
  • Actively participate in internal information sharing with in the department
  • Support communications team in the planning of MSF events and contribute the brain storming with in the team.
  • Managing workload and expectations of requesters.
  • Upholding MSF’s core principles, values, quality standards and Code of Conduct. Respecting MSF’s identification materials and not abusing their use aside from their intended purposes.
  • Promoting and maintaining MSF quality standards

 

Requirements

Experience

  • One year previous working experience in written general/journalistic translations. Desirable in MSF or other NGOs. Medical translation is a plus
  • Basic knowledge in RWS Trados Studio or any other CAT tool.
  • Organization and time-management skills.

                                          

Skills:

  • Excellent Arabic speaking, Very Good English and French language skills, writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to work cooperatively in a dynamic but complex organization
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
