Social Worker

  1. Identification of newly orphaned children
  • To contribute to the identification of intervention areas with vulnerable populations in need and to prioritize the more deficient ones in terms of institutional and associative actors providing child protection services.

  • Contribute to the development/adaptation of tools for the implementation and monitoring of interventions (e.g. database on orphaned children in the intervention area, scoring of vulnerability, etc.)
  • Contribute to the development and updating of the mapping of organizations/services and actors (state/civil society, CBOs, etc.) present in the area and establish, where appropriate, collaboration to improve the care of orphaned children and the provision of Child protection service as a wider area
  • Collect essential data for the selection of orphaned children:
  • Collect data on orphaned children living in the project area, if necessary from local actors (local  authorities, community-based organizations, NGOs, international organizations, etc.)
  • Conducting field surveys to identify eligible and priority families of vulnerable orphaned children in the intervention areas using a standard questionnaire (if necessary, conducting telephone surveys prior to the field visit)
  • Participate in the selection of orphaned children with the MEAL team based on the diagnosis of their vulnerability in order to integrate them into the program
  • Provide feedback to survey participants at least orally (through home visits or phone calls) on the integration of the orphan child into the program or justification for refusal
  • Present the objectives, activities and other relevant information of the project to the families of the orphaned children
  • Accompanying families (proposing a list of available banks, helping them collect the documents needed to open an account, facilitating relations between the bank and the family) in opening a bank account to receive the scholarship
  • Assist families in opening a bank account to receive the scholarship
  • Develop a profile of orphaned children and their families thanks to a protected computer file (photo, filiations, family environment and education)

2. Accompaniment and follow-up of the orphaned child and his family   

Identify the needs of the orphaned child (e.g. academic, protection, social, health, etc.), developed with the child and his/her family a personalized project to meet those needs (information, referral to other services, etc.), support and follow up on its implementation

  • Collect information on orphaned children and their families, essential for the implementation of the program, through home visits (identity, location, social life, difficulties and problems encountered)
  • Regularly document Orphans’ case notes and update the database to ensure a comprehensive record of the orphans’ cases.
  • Plan prepare and conduct home visits (frequency to be adapted according to the level of vulnerability)  including interviews with the child and family to identify with them their difficulties and possible solutions, and following up on each home visit and actions taken through a report
  • Follow up with families on the use of the grant to ensure the child's access to basic rights, including education
  • Refer the guardians with the activities of the SIF or other organizations that could benefit the orphaned child and their family
  • Prepare an exit strategy for orphaned children

Education

  • Identify the needs of households in terms of children's education (materials, school support, enrollment assistance, etc.)
  • Accompany, if necessary, the beneficiary families in the enrollment of their children in school via the mapping of educational actors in the intervention zone, information on enrollment conditions and support for administrative procedures
  • Ensure, if necessary, the provision of school supplies   
  • Follow up on the schooling of the sponsored orphaned child (results, difficulties, orientation)  
  • Accompany, if necessary, the orphaned child and his family in the identification of school support methods through the mapping of the actors of school support and the connection between the families and these actors
  • Facilitate the integration of children, who cannot be schooled in the formal education system, within an educational/training institution adapted to their specific needs (identify the institutions that can meet the needs, find out about possible fees, and help them with the administrative procedures for registration)
  • To exchange with families on good educational practices to support the development of orphaned children in terms of school education, social or health (including hygiene)

Protection

  • Regularly inform the project manager about the health and protection of the sponsored orphaned children and transmit without delay information on cases of concern (e.g. child victims of violence)  
  • Facilitate (refer the family to a provider or put them in direct contact) if necessary, the referral of children to specialized/appropriate services (social services, health, structures, educational structures, etc.)
  • Identify orphan children who are vulnerable or experiencing abuse, neglect, exploitation or violence and offer appropriate support

3. Community activities component

  • Participate, in connection with the protection team in the implementation of child protection and psychosocial support activities for orphaned children, their families and other community members, in accordance with minimum standards  
  • Organize socio-cultural and recreational activities for orphaned children and other children in the community      
  • Promote the creation of support and solidarity networks for the sponsored orphaned children and their guardians
  • Conduct awareness/information sessions with guardians and children (education, protection, health)
  • Facilitation of parenting support sessions with guardians
  • Conduct life skills support sessions with young orphaned children and their siblings (communication, leadership, project management, etc.)
  • Establish and maintain networks with existing community structures and other partners for referral and networking purposes
  • Conduct support groups, committee meetings and participate in community forums

4. Suivi, évaluation et reporting projet/coordination

4.1. Monitoring, evaluation and project reporting

  • Write a report on field and office activities after each activity
  • Report to the project manager on the progress of activities and potential difficulties, and if necessary, propose solutions to improve the implementation and monitoring of the project
  • Participate in capacity building activities, training and exchange of best practices
  • Write and transmit to the project coordination a monthly narrative and detailed report
  • Ensure the collection of the necessary data to inform the indicators related to the characteristics of the sponsored children and the evolution of their situation throughout the sponsorship program
  • Contribute, through regular monitoring of sponsored children and in collaboration with the MEAL team, to the analysis of this consolidated data on the situation of the children and their families and to the monitoring of project indicators, particularly results and impact indicators
  • Capitalize on lessons learned and good practices from the program and make recommendations for program improvement
  • Preparation of success stories periodically;

4.2 Reporting Donors

  • Enable, where appropriate, the exchange of written communication between orphaned children and sponsors in accordance with the internal procedures of the SIF in terms of child protection and safeguarding
  • Participate in the preparation of the annual individual reports of sponsored orphaned children

5. Implementation of the SIF Child Protection Policy

  • Contribute to the mapping of child safeguarding risks for the sponsorship project, the identification of measures to manage these risks, their implementation and monitoring
  • Inform families, including orphaned children, about existing child safeguarding measures and FIS reporting mechanisms
  • Ensure that only data essential to the program is collected and managed in accordance with the principles of confidentiality and ISE

This list is not limited; the caseworker may be required to perform any other tasks that are necessary and consistent with the duties assigned by his/her supervisor.

1. Cursus 

  • Education: Minimum of 3 years of higher education in Social Work or Social Sciences/Education or equivalent professional experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in child protection, social work or similar experience in child education programs, and social support in general;
  • Experience with sponsored orphaned children is considered an asset
  • Experience working in areas with significant social deprivation, marginalisation and discrimination desired.   

3. Knowledge

  • Knowledge of international and national child protection and safeguarding standards  
  • Knowledge of CHS humanitarian standards
  • Knowledge of cross-cutting issues is considered an asset (disability, gender, inclusion, etc.)
