Veterinarian as a consultant on the Animal Facility – Byblos Campus

Part A: Job Content

  1. Position Summary:
  1. The Animal Care Facility Veterinarian is mainly responsible for providing veterinary care, making diagnoses, prescribing medications and treatments, administering vaccinations and performing euthanasia as necessary to the animals.
  2. He/she trains research staff in humane methods of performing surgery and restraining animals, as well as the proper use of anesthetics and analgesics.             
  3. Consults with research personnel on subjects pertaining to the provision and welfare of experimental laboratory animals.
  4. Deals with matters pertaining to health, care, and husbandry of animals kept in the animal facility.

 

  1. Position Duties & Responsibilities:

2.1 On going Duties & Tasks:

  1. Studies the needs of the Animal Care Facility in terms of species and gender of animals, supplies, equipment, equipment repairs, space, personnel. Plans for and requests from the proper department the fulfillment of these needs. Follows through on such orders and recommendations.
  2. Sets up standard operating procedures.
  3. Plans and implements disease prevention and husbandry programs.       
  4. Investigates all factors relating to occurrence of disease in the Animal Care Facility.                           
  5. Administers or directs administration of medications, drugs or surgery used in treatment or control of diseases or injuries to animals in the Animal Care facility."
  6. "Administers or directs administration of drugs to tranquilize, anesthetize or euthanize animals. Advises research personnel in this regard."
  7. Euthanizes animals not suitable for research because of poor health, age or other afflictions.
  8. Conducts daily inspection of animals kept in the Animal Care Facility
  9. Oversees practices of feeding sanitation, housekeeping and operation of equipment
  10. Assigns work schedules and duties of staff and records and reports worker attendance
  11. Keeps records of animals used by various departments and of supplies used by the Animal Care Facility.                                                                                                      

2.2 Periodical Duties & Tasks:   

  1. Breeds animals consistently in order to keep adequate stock of rats and mice.
  2. Attends all ACUC periodic meetings and weighs in on deliberations for review of ACUC submitted protocols.                                                                                                                                                                                     

2.3 People Management Duties & Tasks:

  1. "Regular contacts with administration, faculty, technicians, students, personnel in various service supply and business offices and from other institutions seeking provision of animals"
  2. Routine daily contact with Animal Attendants and other workers.

2.4. Reporting: Directly reports to the Director of Research Ethical Compliance and the Chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC), under the Dean of GSR.

 

Part B:  Job Profile

  1. Masters Level, with relevant specialization "Veterinary Degree (D.V.M.) medicine" or M.S. Degree in a biomedical or animal husbandry program.  
  2. Laboratory Animal technology training program in an accredited university (PhD in animal husbandry is preferred).

 

Part C: Period of Performance

  1. Agreement start: around Mid July 2022 till September 2023 ( yearly renewable)
  2. Attendance on campus: at least twice weekly ( 5 hrs. each time), attend monthly IACUC meetings (3-4 hrs.), respond to inquiries from faculty (2-3 hrs./week)
