Protection Assistant - Child Protection

DRC has been responding to various humanitarian crises in Lebanon since 2004, working with Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian refugees. DRC received registration from the Ministry of Interior in 2011, and since then has focused primarily on responding to the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon and the resulting impact on Lebanese host community. DRC Lebanon’s focus is to ensure that we are able to respond to critical emerging humanitarian needs whilst improve the living conditions of displacement-affected populations and contribute to the achievement of durable solutions.   With an annual portfolio of $12million, and with approximately 200+ staff, DRC is focusing its response in protection and economic recovery (Ec-Rec) sector in Bekka, North Lebanon and Beirut. DRC is also contributing to the evidence base and coordination structures in country through our Evidence Generation and referral information management (RIMs) teams.

About the job

The Protection Assistant will support the implementation of psychosocial support activities under DRC’s Protection programming in North Lebanon under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader. The role will be responsible for outreach, identification and enrolment of adolescent girls, boys and their caregivers in PSS activities, and providing PSS sessions using DRC’s established curricula.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

Programming

  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of psycho-social support and life skills sessions to adolescent girls and boys in adherence to DRC’s curricula;
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of psycho-social and life skills sessions to female and male caregivers, in adherence to DRC’s curricula;
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly and 3-month work plans in a timely manner with validation from the Protection Officer and Team Leader, to ensure timely implementation of activities;
  • Deliver PSS in line with global and national inter-agency SOPs and standards in safe spaces in adherence to inter-agency standards and set session timing in collaboration with participants;
  • Create a safe space where participants can voice their opinions, thoughts and emotions, share experiences and brainstorm on solutions in a confidential and respectful manner;
  • Apply age and gender appropriate facilitation skills during group sessions and use inter-active adult learning techniques to effectively engage with session participants;
  • Identify safe spaces to conduct PSS and outreach activities in adherence with inter-agency guidelines on safe spaces,
  • Ensure that activities are implemented in safe spaces that are accessible to women, men, girls and boys, and in consultation with women, men, girls and boys to allow for their meaningful participation;
  • Participate in outreach activities using different modalities (including door-to-door), to identify vulnerable girls, boys and caregivers in need of PSS services.
  • Effectively engage with the community, caregivers and participants to ensure the meaningful participation and inclusion of most vulnerable and invisible girls and boys;
  • When needed and with their informed consent, safely identify and refer survivors of SGBV and children at risk to case management services and other available services as needed and ensure timely follow-up on referrals based on the interagency guidance on Safe Identification and Referrals;

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning

  • Support and facilitate the collection of monitoring and evaluation data, including baseline and endline questionnaires;
  • Ensure proper and ethical documentation and storage of data collected in line with data protection policies, including attendance sheets, permission slips, parental consent, referrals etc.;

Coordination

  • Actively participate in service mapping and update service map on quarterly basis, share service map with people of concern;
  • Coordinate effectively with CP/GBV case workers to ensure their presence while providing key CP/GBV sessions to adolescent girls, boys and their caregivers, and facilitate introduction of CP case management services to session participants;
  • Coordinate closely with CP and GBV caseworkers to ensure that individual case plans are taken into consideration for tailoring sessions to the needs of participants in PSS activities;
  • Maintain positive relations with community members and key stakeholders, local implementing actors, local authorities, and other international and local stakeholders;

Procurement

  • Support the Protection officer with logistics and procurement processes as needed for the effective implementation of activities, including movement plans

Other

  • Perform any other duties relating to the nature of the job as directed by the Officer and the Protection Manager

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to have a Bachelor Degree in Social work, Counseling, psychology or other related field. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • 1 to 2 years of experience implementing psychosocial support activities for humanitarian organizations in complex settings
  • Experience in CP or SGBV case management is a plus
  • Excellent understanding of and ability to adhere to protection principles, including confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination and safety of beneficiaries
  • Excellent knowledge of SGBV, child protection and PSS basic principles,
  • Good understanding of psychosocial impacts of child protection and GBV concerns on child development and relationships at the family and community level
  • Excellent gender- and age-appropriate facilitation skills
  • Excellent communication and psychosocial first aid skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity and flexibility
  • Comfortable in a multi-cultural environment, flexible and able to handle pressure well
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Ability to work flexible hours
