Function responsibilities include:
- Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation, or interview with local people.
- Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
- Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
- Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
- Translate MSF internal / external documents into local language(s).
- Keep record of all translated documents.
- Look after all equipment provided, i.e., dictionaries or other books that belong to MSF.
- Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.
Specific Accountabilities
- Ensure that the content of training courses and documents is accurately translated and shared with the line manager for double-checking.
- Provide an active, joint explanation during training presentations.
- Modify and adjust the translated documents after review by those who have requested them (expatriates, Drs, NTSs, managers).
- Do accurate translation during meetings and consultations.
- Assist expatriates and others requesting interpretation services in the clinic or field.
- Adopt active communication with the line manager for the tasks requested.
- Be active and acquainted with the training content before its presentation.
- Prioritize physician assistance during patient consultations if requested.
- Ask questions to understand the content of medical topics if necessary for an efficient and accurate translation.
Requirements
Education
- Essential: Bachelor’s degree of English language and literature, translation, or interpretation.
Experience
- Essential: At least 1 year of previous work experience as a medical interpreter in a clinic/hospital setting.
- Desirable: 1 year of previous work experience within a local or international NGO.
Languages
- Essential: Full professional proficiency using the Arabic and English language.
- Desirable: Elementary to limited professional proficiency using the French Language.
Knowledge
- Essential: Basic to intermediate computer literacy using MS-office applications (MS-Word, MS-Outlook, MS-Excel).
