This past year has seen unimaginable suffering in the Middle East.
The ongoing violence since 7 October 2023 has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis that reaches far beyond the region.
Over 40,000 people have been killed in Israel, Gaza and Lebanon, of which well over 90% in Gaza. The UN estimates that almost half of the dead are women and children.
The YMCA unequivocally denounces all forms of violence and calls for an immediate end to the loss of life. We urge for a collective commitment to peace through dialogue and negotiation.
Despite the challenges, the YMCA remains steadfast in its mission to serve communities affected by the conflict. Through our National Movements in Gaza, East Jerusalem, and Lebanon, we continue to support young people and provide vital humanitarian aid. Additionally, our colleagues in Egypt have opened their doors to those fleeing violence.
Since the escalation of hostilities, the YMCA has launched two global appeals: one in October 2023 to support YMCA East Jerusalem, and another in October 2024 to assist YMCA Lebanon. We will continue our efforts in partnership with other humanitarian organizations, working to bring relief to those in need.
The YMCA firmly rejects the use of religion as a justification for violence by anyone. Every faith emphasizes the importance of love, compassion, and the fair treatment of all people. We stand united in promoting peace and understanding across all communities.
