Assignment Context:
UNEP West Asia Office, based in Beirut, Lebanon, coordinates the implementation of UNEP’s Programme of Work in West Asia, with a focus on enabling member states and stakeholders to achieve their visions for sustainable development. This UNV assignment is part of UNEP’s programme of work on chemicals and pollution action.
Task description:
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chemicals and Pollution Action Sub-programme Regional Coordinator or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Programme Associate will:
• Support coordination of the regional air quality network for West Asia.
• Contribute to assessing the status of air quality management in West Asia.
• Contribute to developing a framework document for establishing and operating an air quality network in West Asia with three key elements: (i) promoting coordination and collaboration among West Asian countries on air quality matters and strengthening ties with other global air quality networks/conventions, (ii) facilitating science-policy dialogues grounded in the most up-to-date knowledge and practices, and (iii) bolstering and reinforcing national endeavours to enhance air quality through various collaborative mechanisms.
• Contribute to developing a preliminary workplan for the regional air quality network in West Asia.
• Contribute to drafting a guidebook on formulating and reviewing strategies to reduce air pollution, with a particular emphasis on measures to mitigating emissions from high-impact sectors in West Asia.
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of awareness materials on air quality.
• Contribute to the organization and technical preparation of meetings, webinars, etc. This would include preparation of materials, info notes, and preparing meeting reports.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Required Experience:
3 years of experience in project management and system implementation at the national and/or international level, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
• Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s is desired) in area related to environment management, chemicals and pollution, project management, information technology or other closely related sector. A first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
• Experience with programme and project development, integrated planning and analysis, implementation, and management.
• Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills.
• Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.
• Sound security awareness.
• Have affinity with or interest in the environment, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Living conditions and remarks
As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in UN house, Beirut, Lebanon. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.
National UN Specialist Volunteers in Lebanon are entitled to:
