Under the supervision of the Hygiene Promotion Supervisor, the Hygiene Promoter is responsible for the implementation of hygiene promotion activities as per ACTED’s hygiene promotion strategy.
Functions
- Hygiene Promotion
The Hygiene Promoter is responsible as a team member for implementing a range of hygiene promotion initiatives:
- Household visits
- The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for visiting families in their shelters speaking to the family about established and agreed hygiene priorities, delivering key health information messages, distributing essential items such as soap, listening to the issues of the family, and using effective assessment and communication skills to promote healthy and hygienic behaviour.
- The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for coverage of a specific geographical area.
- Over time, the Hygiene Promoter is responsible for forming strong relationships with their designated community group.
- Peer-to-Peer sessions at Collective Shelters
- Hygiene Promoters are responsible for delivering facilitated peer-to-peer hygiene promotion sessions – such as group sessions with women, children, men or other target groups inside Collective Shelters
- This may include facilitated discussions or activities on agreed and structured messages such as water conservation, solid waste management, hygiene promotion, optimal use of water and sanitation facilities, women’s hygiene, etc.
- Hygiene Promoters are responsible for delivering hygiene promotion activities for children – through fun interactive activities that communicate key messages and encourage improvements in hygiene-related behaviour.
- Community initiatives
- Hygiene Promoters are outreach representatives of ACTED and are at all times responsible for representing ACTED appropriately to the community.
- Hygiene Promotion Campaign development
- The Hygiene Promoters, in coordination with the WASH team, are responsible for undertaking structured research and assessment of hygiene-related issues in the target community, to inform the priorities the programme addresses and how to promote behaviour change effectively for IDPs
- The Hygiene Promoters are responsible for proposing creative and innovative ideas in how to deliver key hygiene messages and influence positively the community’s knowledge, awareness, attitude or behaviour related to health and hygiene.
- Follow up on water demand and water trucking distribution for Collective Shelters
- The Hygiene promoters are responsible for following up with the CS focal persons and the water trucking supplier to ensure proper distribution as per the developed schedule based on the assessed needs at CS level. The Hygiene promoters will also make sure to conduct the water testing using the pool testing kit provided to the CS focal person, and to report to the WASH technical coordinator any incompliant results.
- Organize and support distribution of items in Collective Shelters
- The Hygiene promoters are responsible for updating the needs of Individual Displaced Persons in CSs, and to organize and support the team in the distribution of items in CSs. They will also prepare the needed lists and update the team about the final numbers of items distributed.
- Reporting
- Activity reporting:
- The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for preparing accurate, honest, and timely reports of their individual activities. In particular this includes maintaining signed records of the engagement and activities with the community, focal persons and site managers.
- The Hygiene Promoter is also encouraged to prepare written reports of the results of their activities, assessments and observations.
- Key qualities required in community hygiene promoters
- Hygiene Promoters are required to embody the following qualities and to maintain compliance with ACTED’s rules and policies at all times:
- Good communication skills – and ability and willingness to work with people in difficult personal circumstances (emergency situation)
- Respectful and appropriate attitude towards the refugee, marginalized and displaced communities
- Ability and willingness to work in physically challenging field conditions
