Senior Researcher

We are a charity that uses design and architecture to empower vulnerable children, youth, and their communities. We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Researcher to lead research initiatives and support our diverse activities.

Job Description:

The Senior Researcher will oversee and contribute to all stages of research projects, from conception to dissemination (e.g. YUP project: https://yupcities.org/). This is a part-time role (3 days a week) that involves engaging with communities, leading fieldwork, coordinating activities, and producing high-quality publications and reports. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong research expertise, excellent organisational skills, and a commitment to community engagement. Occasional international travel may be required. The expected start date for this role is 17th March 2025. The Senior Researcher will actively contribute to Design & Build projects by supporting the team in conducting design research tasks and facilitating community engagement activities associated with these projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Coordination and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement research plans, methodologies, and timelines.
  • Lead fieldwork activities, ensuring ethical practices and community participation.
  • Coordinate research tasks with local researchers, stakeholders, and teams.
  • Supervise and support field researchers and community facilitators.
  • Manage logistics for field-based activities, including stakeholder communication.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare high-quality research reports, including published papers and detailed analyses.
  • Document research processes, outcomes, and lessons learned.
  • Draft initial reports and produce comprehensive, compliant field-visit and activity reports. Monitor, evaluate, and learn from research activities to inform next steps and improve project outcomes.
  • Implement community feedback and accountability mechanisms and ensure timely reporting of observations.

Community Engagement:

  • Plan and lead participatory community activities with adults and children.
  • Represent the organisation in forums and coordination meetings at the community level.
  • Facilitate community events and ensure active engagement in research initiatives.

Administrative and Team Support:

  • Create and manage research tools, including digital forms and surveys.
  • Maintain organised and thorough archives of research documentation.
  • Update tasks and schedules using project management software (e.g., Asana, Google Calendar).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, architecture, urban studies, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in conducting and managing research projects, with evidence of published papers, reports, or equivalent outputs.
  • Strong skills in research methodologies, data collection, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in digital tools such as Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, and Word.
  • Fluency in both English and Arabic, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, such as managing research timelines, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, overseeing fieldwork logistics, and ensuring accurate documentation.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience working with communities, including adults and children.
  • Familiarity with participatory approaches and leading community activities.
  • Experience with project management tools (e.g., Asana) and communication platforms (e.g., Slack).
  • Evidence of impactful engagement in community-driven projects.

Selected applicants will be invited for an interview. Shortlisting will occur in two steps: an initial assignment followed by interviews.
