PRINCIPAL INTERFACES
- The Librarian is responsible for the overall management of the Beirut Municipal Public Library in Monnot.
- They report directly to the Libraries Coordinator and work closely with the Executive Coordinator, librarians, Kotobus animators, Activities Coordinator, Project Managers, Communication Officer, and the Assabil office team.
- This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, distributed over six working days.
MISSION 1: Library Management and Administration
- Create a Welcoming Environment – Ensure all library visitors feel comfortable and valued.
- Promote Reading & Public Spaces – Uphold the library’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring access to all individuals regardless of nationality, social status, political or religious beliefs, gender, age, or legal status.
- Collection Development – Assist with the selection of books, magazines, newspapers, and digital resources based on community needs.
- Manage Online Resources – Maintain and update the library’s online resources webpage.
- Promote Library Services & Collections – Collaborate with the Communication Officer to raise awareness of available resources.
- Manage Serials Subscriptions – Oversee the acquisition and renewal of periodicals.
- Weeding & Inventory – Remove outdated, damaged, or underutilized materials to maintain a relevant collection.
- Cataloging & Classification – Organize materials using the library management system.
- Interlibrary Loan Management – Facilitate book loans between libraries.
- Policy & Strategic Planning – Contribute to policy formulation and strategic planning by participating in team assessments and improvement discussions.
- Usage Records & Reporting – Maintain records of library usage and compile monthly and annual statistical reports.
- Library Maintenance & Security – Ensure the library remains clean, safe, and well-maintained; address equipment repairs and security concerns; manage computers, printers, and internet services.
- Staff & Volunteer Supervision – If applicable, oversee part-time staff and volunteers, delegate tasks, and provide training.
- Patron Services & Outreach – Assist patrons in finding books, conducting research, and navigating online resources.
- Circulation Management – Oversee checkouts, renewals, and returns while implementing an efficient tracking system.
- Customer Service – Respond to patron inquiries, complaints, and special requests.
- Financial Responsibilities – Manage the library cashbox in collaboration with the Financial Officer.
- Staff Training & Professional Development – Stay up to date with library trends, policies, and best practices through online courses and workshops.
MISSION 2: Library Activities and Programs
- Plan & Execute Cultural and Educational Activities – Organize diverse programs in collaboration with the Activities Coordinator and Project Managers.
- School Outreach – Manage relationships with schools and coordinate class visits.
- Partnerships & Community Engagement – Work with local associations to host activities and events.
- Activity Promotion & Audience Development – Help promote library events and identify target audiences.
- Program Development – Participate in activities committee meetings to propose and refine new programs, especially for donor-funded projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A degree in Library Science with at least 5 years of experience in the relevant field
- Excellent spoken and written skills in Arabic, French and English
- Great verbal communication skills and approachability
- Good computer skills
- Team work abilities
- Strong motivation for ASSABIL’s mission and for cultural mediation
