Basketball & Athletics Coaches -PSS & Sports Project

BACKGROUND:

Since 2006, Right to Play has been working in Lebanon to support most marginalized children and young people, provide them with access to play-based learning and psychosocial support. In our new strategy 2024-2026, Right to Play will focus on enhancing the learning and social and emotional skills of children affected by crisis through play-based teaching methodologies, providing play-based psychosocial support to improve the holistic wellbeing of children and young people, and supporting young people to fulfill their potential and drive change at local and national levels.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Sport for Development (SFD) project, which runs from mid-2024 until the end of 2025, is a continuation of the same two-year project between 2022 and 2023. The project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is directed by a consortium led by the International Sports Alliance (ISA).

The project aims to support 2,000 young people, with a focus on girls’ participation, with access to life skills, psychosocial support (PSS), and technical sports skills by empowering 70 young coaches who use psychosocial support through sport - basketball and kids’ athletics- to promote healthy lifestyles in Beirut and North Lebanon.

  1. Purpose
  • To lead fun and age-appropriate basketball and kids’ athletics sessions for children and youth aged 8 to 18. By integrating Right To Play’s psychosocial support frameworks and values, the coach will contribute to empowering young people through sport, building life skills, and promoting teamwork, resilience, and positive behavior.
  1. Accountability & Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate basketball and athletics sessions following Right To Play’s methods.
  • Plan and adapt sessions to meet the needs and progress of children and youth.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and child-friendly environment at all times.
  • Attend sessions reliably and collaborate with the program team to share updates and challenges.
  • Uphold Right To Play’s values, safeguarding rules, and promote teamwork and positive behavior.
  1. Scope, Impact, and Autonomy
  • The Coach works under the supervision of  the project Officer or the Project Coordinator  but is expected to independently plan and adapt sessions based on participants’ needs and program guidelines. While session schedules and content frameworks are provided, the Coach has discretion in modifying delivery to ensure sessions are age-appropriate, inclusive, and responsive to the group’s dynamics. Guidance and support are available from the program team when needed.

 

  1.  Leadership and Staff Management
  • No direct supervisory responsibilities. However, it is expected to demonstrate leadership by effectively guiding groups of children during sessions, modeling positive behavior, and upholding safeguarding standards.
  1.  Information Requirement for Decision-Making
  • The Youth Sports Coach uses information such as participants’ age, skill level, attendance, and behavior observations to plan and adapt to sessions effectively. Decisions are also informed by project team guidelines, safeguarding protocols, and feedback from participants, caregivers, and the project team to ensure sessions are inclusive, safe, and impactful.
  1.  Innovation and Improvements
  • The role supports continuous improvement by suggesting new games, techniques, or approaches that enhance learning, participation, and well-being, while remaining aligned with Right To Play’s methodologies and values.
  1. Relationships & Communications
  •  The Coach works closely with the Project Coordinator to plan and improve sessions. They communicate respectfully with children, youth, and sometimes their families to support participation and well-being. All communication follows Right To Play’s values and child protection and Safeguarding rules

           8. Expertise (Certifications / Education, Professional Experience)

  • Education: A background in sports or physical education is preferred, Certification in coaching or sports training is a plus.
  • Experience: working with children and youth is required, ideally 1-2 years.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in planning and delivering age-appropriate sports sessions, with the ability to adapt activities to meet the needs of children and youth.
  • Additional: Knowledge or training in child protection and psychosocial support is a plus.
  • Duration of the project: 4 months
  • Expected number of sessions: 2-3 sessions per week
  • Payment: 10$/session
