Syrian Arab Republic: Flash Update No. 1 - Escalation of Hostilities in As-Sweida Governorate (as of 18 July 2025)

Highlights

  • Since 12 July, armed hostilities and clashes escalated in As-Sweida Governorate, southern Syria, causing deaths and injuries among civilians and large-scale internal displacement.
  • Airstrikes attributed to Israeli forces were reported in different locations in As-Sweida, Damascus, Dar’a and Rural Damascus governorates.
  • At least 87,000 people were displaced within As-Sweida and towards Dar’a Governorate, the majority of them were displaced mainly within As-Sweida Governorate.
  • Displaced families need food, water, shelter, non-food items (NFIs) and healthcare as top reported needs, with local systems under increasing strain and immediate humanitarian assistance required to prevent further deterioration.
  • Damage to infrastructure from airstrikes and armed clashes has cut off electricity, water, telecommunications, and internet in most areas, particularly As-Sweida City.
  • The UN and humanitarian partners are mobilizing to deliver humanitarian assistance and assess needs in As-Sweida as security allows.
  • The World Health Organization has dispatched emergency medical supplies to Dar’a to support trauma care, but deliveries to As-Sweida remain pending due to security access.
  • Humanitarian partners delivered relief items like water, food and NFIs to displaced people residing in newly established reception centers in Dar’a.
