UNHCR Flash Update #7 on the situation in As-Sweida - 9 September 2025

Overview

Since 13 July 2025, the security situation in As-Sweida and Dar’a Governorates in southern Syria has escalated due to political tensions and armed confrontations. Although the hostilities have overall subsided, the situation in As-Sweida and the surrounding areas remains volatile.

Despite operational challenges, UNHCR continues to provide humanitarian assistance without major disruptions across the governorates hosting displaced populations.

Through its office in As-Sweida, UNHCR staff remain on the ground, ensuring the continued delivery of support and conducting regular field missions to reach communities with high concentrations of displaced families. Moreover, UNHCR is providing support to displaced populations in Dar'a and Rural Damascus.

On 31 July, the Syrian government announced the formation of an investigative committee to examine incidents committed during the hostilities. The committee will submit periodic updates and a final report.

On 23 August, some 30 local factions in As-Sweida announced their unification under the National Guard Forces (NGF) to consolidate security and military efforts across the governorate. The group pledged allegiance to the spiritual leadership of Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, recognized as the legitimate representative of the Druze community. In a statement, the NGF has outlined several strategic priorities, including maintaining internal security, safeguarding stability in urban and rural areas, preventing lawlessness, and countering criminal activities.
