JOB SUMMARY
A Shelter Assistant / Caregiver is responsible for providing daily support to residents, ensuring their safety, well-being, and dignity, while maintaining a clean, organized, and supportive shelter environment.
MAJOR DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
• Acquaint oneself immediately upon coming on duty with the relevant events relating to residents, staff, premises and equipment which have occurred since previously on duty, by reading and signing the report book and reporting to the employee on duty. To report to the employee on duty before leaving the establishment after a period of duty is completed.
• Receive residents and provide basic needs items.
• Undertake the full range of caring duties in accordance with the Safe Shelters SOPs.
• Assist with the preparation of simple refreshments, meals and light meals, cleaning and washing up for residents.
• Be always aware of the whereabouts of any beneficiary who has not retired to bed and be prepared to assist any of them if necessary.
• Visit each floor and each bedroom every two hours during the day and night in order to make sure that any of the beneficiary is in need of assistance.
• Ensure that a senior member of staff is briefed as to any particular issues concerning the residents and any problems in general at the end of the shift. For emergencies, report it on the spot to the line manager.
• Perform light domestic duties, such as general tidying, wiping tables and chairs and other surfaces, but the care of residents must always take priority over the domestic work.
• Encourage residents to maintain maximum independence, taking into account any physical/mental disabilities and to stimulate their participation in the running of the safe shelter.
• Undertake personal and intimate duties may be required for individuals in the safe shelter (such as putting to bed at night, getting up in the morning, bathing, toileting, assisting with dressing/undressing, personal cleanliness and appearance).
• Where applicable to participate in staff meetings, attend supervision sessions, trainings, workshops and where possible to attend reviews and to assist in implementing recommendations.
• Ensure that the shelter’s regulations are respected by all the beneficiaries and report immediately any breach to the line manager.
• Work occasionally for very urgent cases (escorting residents during medical issues, appointments, shopping …) in coordination with the coordinator.
• Coordinate with the nurse on the medical status of the residents and make sure the medications are properly taken.
• Make sure that all furniture and equipment of the safe shelter are in good condition, and report immediately to the line manager any damage.
• Accompany the residents in all the shelter’s premises day and night ensuring their safety and security and all their basic needs are met.
• Assume responsibility for the overseeing of the premises in the absence of a designated manager.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
• Academic: Certificate in caregiving
• Communication, writing, analytical and negotiation skills
• Related Work Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in related field
• Language skills: English and Arabic Computer Literacy: MS-Word / MS-Excel – Intermediate level
