Contract type: independent/local consultant
Berghof Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization supporting people in conflict in their efforts to achieve sustainable peace through conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Headquartered in Berlin, the organization is run by a diverse team and works with local partners around the world. Berghof Foundation is seeking a highly skilled Toolkit Developer, Translator and Designer in Lebanon for our project “Rapid Response - host community engagement initiative”.
The Toolkit Developer, Translator and Designer will support the development of a concise, practical, and user-friendly two-page conflict mitigation toolkit in Arabic and English.
The toolkit will be used by insider mediators, community responders, volunteers, and local actors working with host communities and displaced populations. It should provide simple and accessible guidance on conflict-sensitive communication, early identification of tensions, dialogue, de-escalation, active listening, and constructive engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Review and Refinement
The consultant will:
- Review existing draft content, notes, tools, or guidance materials provided by the project team.
- Refine the content into a clear, concise, and practical two-page toolkit.
- Ensure the toolkit is accessible to non-specialist users, including volunteers, community responders, and local actors.
- Simplify technical peacebuilding, mediation, psychosocial, or conflict-related language without losing meaning.
- Ensure the content is action-oriented and easy to apply in real community settings.
- Organize the toolkit in a logical structure that supports quick reading and practical use.
- Ensure the toolkit reflects the realities of displacement-related tensions in Lebanon.
Translation and Bilingual Adaptation
The consultant will:
- Produce the toolkit in both Arabic and English.
- Ensure accurate translation of key concepts related to conflict mitigation, mediation, dialogue, de-escalation, active listening, non-violent communication, and psychosocial sensitivity.
- Adapt the language to be culturally appropriate and understandable in the Lebanese context.
- Avoid overly academic, technical, or literal translation.
- Ensure consistency of terminology across both language versions.
- Review the final Arabic and English versions for clarity, grammar, flow, and accuracy.
Toolkit Design and Layout
The Consultant will:
- Design a visually clear, professional, and user-friendly two-page toolkit.
- Develop a clean layout that allows users to quickly understand and apply the content.
- Use headings, icons, boxes, checklists, short tips, or visual elements where appropriate.
- Ensure the design is suitable for both digital sharing and printing.
- Align the design with Berghof Foundation’s visual identity, branding, and communication style.
- Prepare final files in editable and shareable formats, as requested by the project team.
- Ensure that the Arabic and English versions are equally well-formatted and readable.
Field Usability and Practical Relevance
The consultant will:
- Ensure the toolkit is practical for use by insider mediators and community actors during field engagement.
- Present content in a way that supports quick reference before or during community sessions.
- Include practical prompts, do’s and don’ts, guiding questions, or simple steps where useful.
- Ensure the toolkit helps users recognize early signs of tension and respond constructively.
- Adapt content to the needs of actors working with host communities, displaced populations, volunteers, municipalities, shelter actors, and community responders.
- Incorporate feedback from the project team and, where relevant, from insider mediators or field actors.
Coordination and Revision
The consultant will:
- Coordinate with the Project Manager and relevant technical staff throughout the assignment.
- Participate in briefing or review meetings as needed.
- Submit draft versions for review and incorporate feedback.
- Ensure final outputs are delivered within the agreed timeline.
- Maintain flexibility to adjust the content, language, or design based on field needs and project feedback.
Education:
- BA degree in Graphic Design or a related field.
Experience:
- Proven experience developing practical tools, guidance notes, manuals, awareness materials, or communication products.
- Strong Arabic and English writing, editing, and translation skills.
- Experience simplifying complex technical content for community-level audiences.
- Graphic design and layout experience.
- Ability to produce visually clear and professional materials.
- Understanding of conflict sensitivity, mediation, dialogue, social cohesion, displacement, humanitarian response, or peacebuilding is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with the Lebanese context and displacement-related community tensions is an asset.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and incorporate feedback efficiently.
Further Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong knowledge of the local context in one or more of the target areas.
- Ability to work under pressure and in sensitive environments.
