Teaching Hours: One class per week (4 hours teaching) for a total of 16 days per semester (64 hours)
Days of week: Wednesdays or Saturdays starting October 25th, 2017
Time: From 1h15 PM to 5h45 PM
Key areas of Responsibility
Deliver one class of Math per week from October – January to a section of up to 25 students
Main topics include:
limits, derivatives and methods of differentiation
basic integration and various methods of integration
Assigning and grading exercises
Giving feedback and communicating effectively with students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds
Delivering the material in a technology-enhanced format utilizing online materials prepared specifically for the program
Reviewing the curriculum and updating it as per needs of the class or the training
Coordination with AUB faculty supervisor and other section instructor
Reporting as required
Participation in occasional training and evaluation sessions
Key Characteristics and Qualifications
Experience teaching the subject in a high school (grade 12), university, (experience teaching students from underprivileged communities would be an added advantage)
Relevant academic degree
Skilled in engaging learners with diverse previous educational experience utilizing student-centered learning techniques
Passionate about working with with young people and disadvantaged communities
Fluency in English and Arabic is essential
Good facilitation and time management skills
Strong skills in basic computer applications, previous experience using online resources and technology in the classroom is a plus
Background: The American University of Beirut (AUB) Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service in collaboration with the Kayany Foundation will implement a blended college-readiness program that prepares Syrian refugee and vulnerable host community youth for entry into higher education and provides transferable skills. The eight-month program will provide foundational academic course work in English, Math, Science, Ethics & Human Rights, Critical Thinking and digital skills. This project is funded by UK aid from the British people through SPHEIR (Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education Innovation and Reform); other partners include King’s College London, Al Al Bayt University (Jordan), Kiron Open Higher Education (Germany), and FutureLearn (UK).
