Applications are invited for professionals with a background in oral history to conduct a five-day training workshop in Arabic in Gaziantep, Turkey. The successful applicant will join the curator of a Syrian Voices library to conduct the workshop for a group of 20 Syrian professionals in the spring.
The assignment Sharq is producing a library of oral histories of Syrians that showcase the country's culture and society prior to 2011. We have to date documented over sixty interviews conducted in Lebanon and will this year focus our efforts on conducting and documenting interviews with Syrians living in Turkey.
The first phase of this process involves running a workshop for Syrians with experience in culture or media who will then go on to conduct the oral histories interviews.
As such we require the services of a professional with experience in both the production of oral histories and in running workshops. This training workshop will be held in Arabic so fluency in spoken Arabic essential.
The assignment is for six days – to include one day of preparatory work and five days training. The trainer will be expected to prepare and present training materials as a short manual in Arabic.
The trainer is responsible for:
- Producing outline of curriculum and objectives for five day training workshop, in collaboration with project manager
- Producing a summary manual outlining skills and principles of oral histories in Arabic
- Conducting a training workshop for approx. 20 people in Gaziantep over five consecutive days in spring 2017
- Writing a report, summarizing the workshop and identifying strongest candidates among the cohort
Remuneration
Applicants are asked to include their daily fee with their application. Travel to and accommodation in Gaziantep will be covered separately.
