While our core mission is medical, speaking out about the plight of the people we help is just as important to the MSF mission.
Our Field Communications Managers (FCMs) are often the first link in this chain of témoignage – or witnessing – bringing the world’s attention to the areas where we work. They also help MSF’s field teams manage our communications and reputation in the countries where we have projects. We communicate with patients, staff and key stakeholders.
Our FCMs are usually based in the capital of the country but spend a lot of time travelling to MSF projects to collect information, gather stories and testimonies, and work with local and foreign media. They have a key role in developing communication strategies for their contexts in support of the medical and humanitarian teams.
Our FCMs can have an incredible impact on MSF’s global positioning as well as visibility and fundraising. They also take media pressure off the medical teams, allowing them to concentrate on our patients.
A Field Communications Manager will be expected to:
Define the communications strategy for MSF in the country in which they work, with the support of colleagues in headquarters
Help build consensus on key messages and positioning on specific issues
Manage our in-country communications including social media platforms where appropriate
Maintain close contact with key local and foreign media – actively promoting MSF content and facilitating media visits to projects
Produce reports on the local media landscape as well as achieved results and future priorities, identifying risks and opportunities for MSF communications
Produce local or/and international communications materials and advise on suitable communications tools to fulfill objectives, pass messages and reach identified audiences
Manage, develop and supervise staff (Field Communications Officers) under the FCM’s direct responsibility
Provide and manage a yearly communications budget to support identified and agreed communications priorities
