About KAFA:
KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation is a feminist, secular, Lebanese, non-profit, non-governmental civil society organization seeking to create a society that is free of social, economic and legal patriarchal structures that discriminate against women. KAFA has been aiming to eliminate all forms of exploitation and violence against women since its establishment in 2005. It seeks to realize substantive gender equality through the adoption of a combination of different approaches, such as: Advocacy for law reform and introduction of new laws and policies; influencing public opinion, practices and mentality; conducting research and training; and empowering women and children victims of violence, and providing them with social, legal, and psychological support. Our focus areas are: Family violence; Exploitation and trafficking in women, especially in migrant domestic workers and women in prostitution; Child protection, particularly from sexual and gender-based violence.
About the project:
Since 2013, KAFA has partnered with UNICEF in a project titled “Protecting children and adolescents from Gender-Based Violence” aiming at enhancing the protection of vulnerable children and adolescents affected by the Syrian crisis from GBV (early marriage, sexual abuse...), through promoting their right to information by improving their access to adequate services and their awareness on how to protect themselves from GBV. The project is ongoing for the third consecutive year.
The media officer for this project will be employed on a part-time basis until end of December 2016 (renewable). S/he will work closely with the communications coordinator and the “Child Protection” team in KAFA, to develop and implement communications and media activities that advance KAFA’s efforts to combat gender-based violence and child abuse, in particular within the framework of the aforementioned project, implemented by KAFA in partnership with UNICEF.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement communications and media activities for the project: Create ideas and content for IEC materials, depending on the activities and needs of the project, Follow up with the production of the materials, Execute and/or propose media campaigns and initiatives related to the project, Look for and liaise with external media contractors and artists (designers, photographers, etc.), Organize media and artistic events as planned in the project.
Write/edit content for all communication channels (press releases, news, stories, project updates, preliminary scripts, etc.);
Conduct field visits as needed to support KAFA's communications;
Develop tools and content to support and raise the visibility of KAFA’s program on child protection on all communication channels (digital, audiovisual, print, etc.);
Develop ways to maximize the communications value of KAFA’s website and social media platforms in relation to child protection activities, and monitor its effectiveness;
Share regular content updates based on program developments (announcements, article links, stories, visuals, news and events);
Support and develop a comprehensive database of external communication contractors (artists, designers, film makers, writers, photographers etc.);
Support and develop a database of journalists from local and international media institutions, and other key media players;
Support the coordination with the press and key media players on a regular basis.
Key Characteristics:
Be a graduate (BA, or Master’s degree) in the area of communications/media/ graphic design/ social science/arts/ human rights/ or related fields;
Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in external communications; preference will be given to people with experience with NGOs;
Have an understanding of issues relating to gender-based violence and children’s human rights, and a commitment to advancing these rights;
Be able to communicate and write fluently in Arabic and English, with both internal and external audiences.
Professional Standards:
While working on this project, the consultant is required to sign KAFA’s Child Protection Policy.
