BACKGROUND and JUSTIFICATION: KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation is a feminist, Lebanese, secular, non-profit, non-governmental civil society organization seeking to create a society that is free of social, economic and legal patriarchal structures that discriminate against women. KAFA has been aiming to eliminate all forms of exploitation and violence against women since its establishment in 2005. It seeks to realize substantive gender equality through the adoption of a combination of different approaches, such as: Advocacy for law reform and introduction of new laws and policies; altering public opinion, practices and mentality; conducting research and training; and empowering women and children victims of violence.
Our focus areas are: Family violence; Exploitation and trafficking in women, especially in migrant domestic workers and women in prostitution; Child protection, particularly from sexual and gender-based violence.
During 2015, KAFA continues to partner with UNICEF in a project titled “Protecting children and adolescents from Gender Based Violence” aiming at enhancing the protection of vulnerable children and adolescents affected by the Syrian crisis from Gender Based violence (early marriage and sexual abuse), through promoting their right to information by improving their access to adequate services and their awareness, as well as that of their caregivers, on how to protect themselves from Gender Based Violence.
The project includes operating an Adolescent Friendly Space in Bekaa that provides services for adolescents aged between 10 and 17 years old, including awareness sessions, educational activities (Literacy and English courses), outreach activities, and case management. Activities for engaging boys on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) prevention through theatre, photography workshops, exhibitions and performance will be held in the center in Bekaa with adolescent boys from the informal settlements (IS) and households in Central and West Bekaa:
Photography workshop:
The workshop will target 45 boys affected by the Syrian crisis through three different groups. Each group will attend 20 sessions on photography. Two of the sessions will be held in an outdoor location to help create and encourage an environment of creativity and group work. The group will be accompanied by the photography consultant during the outdoor sessions which will be an opportunity for the participants to practice what they learned and exchange thoughts, knowledge, and ideas among each other. The 20 sessions aim at teaching the participants the technicalities of using a camera, choosing a theme related to SGBV, and portraying it through photography. Moreover, the teacher will bring to the discussions with the groups stories and topics related to SGVB to raise their awareness on the issue, and will support them in building their own perspective in analyzing the issue.
The sets of pictures taken by the group of adolescents will be gathered and displayed in an exhibition that will take place in Beirut. The aim of the exhibition is to reach a larger number of adolescents, and raise awareness on SGBV in general. The exhibition will be organized and held throughout 3 days in Beirut and targeting 500 adolescents from several communities and humanitarian agencies, and by doing so, it is encouraging peer education among adolescents on GBV related issues.
