Informal Recycling Sector Research Intern

Green Line Association is seeking three highly qualified research interns to assist with a research project on informal recyclers in Beirut and the surrounding areas. Through a one-month internship, the interns will gain valuable experience conducting interviews and learning about the efforts and organization of Beirut’s informal recycling sector as part of Lebanon’s waste management system. Pending the results of this research, the interns may have the opportunity to be co-authors on a published paper on the topic. The internship includes a $200 stipend, and incurred travel costs will be reimbursed. Responsibilities Conduct interviews in colloquial Lebanese Arabic with informal recyclers and recycling companies in the Beirut municipality and surrounding suburbs following a memorized interview protocol. Ensure the clear, accurate collection of data and assist with data cleaning and entry. Attend research training days and be able to fluently speak on the scope and goals of the project. Ensure data collection targets and reporting deadlines are adhered to. Communicate frequently and effectively with the entire research team. Assist the Research Coordinator with logistic tasks related to the project. Qualifications Fluent in colloquial Arabic with excellent oral and written abilities; strong oral communication skills in English. Previous experience conducting sociological interviews. Ability and sensitivity conducting interviews with a wide variety of people in diverse areas of the greater Beirut region. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate effectively with a team. Initiative and follow-through, organization, and critical thinking skills. Enthusiasm and interest in the research topic. The applicant must be available from approximately July 20th-August 20th, 2015. Their schedule must be flexible to be able to conduct interviews at a variety of times throughout the day and early evening. Green Line Association Based in Beirut, Green Line is a non-governmental scientific association that aims to promote environmental awareness and document environmental threats in order to better confront them, thereby introducing change at the community level. Throughout the past 23 years, Green Line has worked on a wide array of issues such as plastic bag reduction, coastal area protection and management, lobbying against quarrying and illegal rock and sand mining, monitoring of biodiversity, promotion of sustainable transport and renewable energy, and much more. All of this work was completed through efforts of a diverse group of volunteers from different backgrounds.
