Arabic Translations Coordinator, Middle East And North Africa And Communications Divisions

Responsibilities:   Support the Manager’s translation requests and ensure a smooth work flow and respect of deadlines; Vet returned translations for accuracy and update HRW’s Arabic language glossary and translation memory system, providing translators with updated lexicons of legal international human rights law and international humanitarian law terminology to ensure homogeneity of terms; Translate urgent short documents (invitations, report blurbs, captions); Process invoices, attain approval from managers, and keep track of how many words per day the Arabic translation process can produce at any given time;   Backstop the Manager in maintaining HRW’s online presence in Arabic, http://www.hrw.org/ar;   Work with the Multimedia Division to translate photo essay captions and video subtitles in a timely manner; Maintain and update HRW’s MENA press lists; and Carry out any other tasks as required. Related Skills and Knowledge:    Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required; excellent knowledge of classical Arabic grammar is required.   Demonstrated experience with translating material from English to Arabic and vice versa is required and experience with translation workflows is desirable.   Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required.   Strong online/Microsoft Office skills are required; experience with HTML and photo editing are a plus.   Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required.   Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is required.   Ability and self-motivation to work in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as a member of a team, is required.   Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.   Experience working on a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal preferred, or publishing to a website is desirable.   A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.   Other: Applicants for this position must possess current Lebanese or Jordanian work authorization.     Human Rights Watch is an equal opportunity employer that does not discriminate in its hiring practices and, in order to build the strongest possible workforce, actively seeks a diverse applicant pool.
