PURPOSE OF THE CONSULTANCY:
World Vision Lebanon (WVL) seeks to contract a professional expert or expert organization with a broad background and experience in life skills education. The consultant/organization’s main role will be to design and provide a life skills training program targeting teachers of WVL partner schools on positive classroom environment to enhance their communication skills and teaching methods.
BACKGROUND:
The rationale behind this intervention is to tackle the school environment ecologically by influencing teachers’ teaching attitudes and skills, while also building their capacity to facilitate life skills education sessions with their students, in the purpose of promoting positive interaction between students, their parents, their teachers and their peers.
Phase 1 of the intervention will focus on providing skill-based training for all teachers and school directors within selected 27 schools in Beirut Area on the promotion of a positive classroom environment. Phase 2 of the intervention will include providing specific and intensive training for a select number of teachers from the 27 schools on life skills curriculum and facilitation of life skills education sessions with students from grade 3 to 6.
The current TORs pertain to Phase 1 only.
SPECIFIC REQUIRED TASKS:
The expected tasks include the following:
1. Train teachers on the promotion of positive classroom environment:
The training of teachers should include the following topics:
Non-violent communication
Positive teaching methods and integrated learning: facilitation and class management skills, interactive teaching methods, setting boundaries and rules
Importance of life skills education and education for peace (how teachers can promote positive interaction between people of various ethnic, religious, social and political backgrounds)
N.B. Training course should be composed of 2 full days. The total number of training workshops required is 27 (1 training workshop for all teachers within each school for the 27 selected schools in Beirut). Applicants should be able to quote the number of trainings they could cover within the timeline presented in the TORs (below). Offers should clearly showcase cost per course and the availability of dates.
2. Develop a pre and post-test tool for the evaluation of the training
3. Build the capacity of WVL staff and relevant local stakeholders on post-training classroom monitoring and on providing support to teachers for the promotion of a positive classroom environment
4. Assist WVL staff and relevant local stakeholders in following-up and monitoring teachers’ teaching methods and classroom environment by participating in monitoring activities and providing technical support and coaching of teachers as necessary
5. Provide a detailed report upon the accomplishment of all tasks
Following phase 1 of the intervention, teachers should be able to:
Communicate in a non-violent way with the students.
Use interactive methods for teaching and for class management.
Set boundaries in a participatory approach.
Acknowledge life skills as an approach for peace education.
Liaise with WVL staff to provide the support needed for the promotion of a positive classroom environment
CONSULTANT QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
The Consultant should have the following competencies and experience:
- Experience in training teachers on life skills
- Familiar with the non-violent communication techniques
- Familiar with positive disciplining and class management techniques
- Familiar with civil society and NGO engagement
- Good analytical and critical thinking
- Strong English language proficiency
DURATION OF THE CONSULTANCY:
The consultant/organization will provide services for WVL as needed during the period from the April 22 until May 31, 2015.
