Hygiene Promotion Assistant (Chouf)

  Background CARE is a leading relief and development non-governmental organization fighting global poverty. Established in 1946, it is now a confederation composed of 14 members. CARE is implementing a regional response to the Syrian Crisis to meet the immediate and most urgent needs of the women, men, boys and girls who have fled Syria. CARE is very well established in the region and set up an office in Jordan as early as 1948. CARE International in Lebanon (CIL) is supporting refugees as well as local communities through WASH, NFIs and Cash assistance activities in the North and Mount Lebanon Governorates   The Hygiene Promoter is responsible as a team member for implementing a range of hygiene promotion initiatives:  1.1         Household visits -          The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for visiting families in their shelters speaking to the family about established and agreed hygiene priorities, delivering key health information messages, distributing essential items such as soap, listening to the issues of the family, and using effective assessment and communication skills to promote healthy and hygienic behavior. -          The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for coverage of a specific geographical area. -          Over time, the Hygiene Promoter is responsible for forming strong relationships with their designated community group.   1.2          Peer-to-Peer sessions -          Hygiene Promoters are responsible for delivering facilitated peer-to-peer hygiene promotion sessions – such as group sessions with women, children, men or other target groups. -          This may include facilitated discussions or activities on agreed and structured messages such as water conservation, optimal use of water and sanitation facilities, women’s hygiene, etc. -          Hygiene Promoters are responsible for delivering hygiene promotion activities for children – through fun interactive activities that communicate key messages and encourage improvements in hygiene-related behaviour.   1.3          Community initiatives -          Hygiene Promoters are responsible for implementing community hygiene promotion activities, including mass communication campaigns, public events such as Community Clean Up days, market place initiatives, etc. -          Hygiene Promoters are outreach representatives of CARE and are at all times responsible for representing CARE appropriately to the community.   1.4          Hygiene Promotion Campaign development -          The Hygiene Promoters are responsible for undertaking structured research and assessment of hygiene-related issues in the target community, to inform the priorities the programme addresses and how to promote behavior change effectively. -          The Hygiene Promoters are responsible for proposing creative and innovative ideas in how to deliver key hygiene messages and influence positively the community’s knowledge, awareness, attitude or behavior related to health and hygiene.   2.      Reporting  2.1         Activity reporting: -          The Hygiene Promoter is responsible for responsible for preparing accurate, honest, and timely reports of their individual activities. In particular this includes maintaining signed records of the engagement and activities with the community. -          The Hygiene Promoter is also encouraged to prepare written reports of the results of their activities, assessments and observations.    Selection Criteria People Skills: Ability to work independently and as a team player who demonstrates leadership and is able to support and train local and international staff and also able to work with disaster affected communities in a sensitive and participatory manner. Communication Skills: Well developed written and oral communication skills. Able to communicate clearly and sensitively with internal and external stakeholders as a representative of CARE. This includes effective negotiation and representation skills. Integrity: Works with trustworthiness and integrity and has a clear commitment to CARE's core values and humanitarian principles. Resilience/Adaptability and flexibility: Ability to operate effectively under extreme circumstances including stress, high security risks and harsh living conditions. Works and lives with a flexible, adaptable and resilient manner. Awareness and sensitivity of self and others: Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to gender and diversity. Have experience and the ability to live and work in diverse cultural contexts in a culturally appropriate manner. Has a capacity to make accurate self-assessment particularly in high stress and high security contexts. Work style: Is well planned and organized even within a fluid working environment and has a capacity for initiative and decision making with competent analytical and problem solving skills.
