The Legal Agenda is seeking to hire a researcher within the implementation of the project entitled “Civil observatory for the independence and transparency of the judiciary”.
The Legal Agenda is a Beirut-based non-governmental non-profit organization that addresses issues of legal activism, reform, and transformation in the context of social and political change in the Arab world.
Responsibilities
I- Scope of work
The researcher shall conduct research, documentation and writing described in the Project activities, relevant to the Project’s main objectives, namely (1) increased independence and transparency of the judiciary and (2) vulnerable groups are judicially empowered and able to co-build their cases before Lebanese courts. This will entail:
Objective I
- Collect relevant data on regulations and draft regulations, including by liaising with the relevant public authorities in order to obtain texts related to the judiciary.
- Monitor, analyze and comment on judicial practices
- Contribute to the writing of (five) quarterly reports and (five) articles in total, pertaining to the judiciary in Lebanon, and to the main adopted or announced policies regarding the judiciary
- Contribute to the writing of a paper on the importance of creating first instance administrative courts, in light of regional and European experiences.
Objective II
- Collecting and analyzing sentences and judicial files related to vulnerable groups and to press offenses
- Collecting and commenting on judicial decisions of particular interest, with the cases to be selected in consultation with the Director and co-applicants
- Liaiseing with the Project co-applicants in order to conduct the documentation and research work, and select specific cases of interest. This will entail working closely with the co-applicants, in their premises.
- Conducting video testimonies of vulnerable groups about their experience in court; of lawyers regarding their experience before exceptional courts; and of judges to document complaints they make about interventions in their work, their experience and opinion on issues related to vulnerable groups
- Conducting trial observations in cases of disabled persons
- Contributing to the writing of the Legal Agenda magazine, the Legal Agenda supplement, and website content on issues falling within the scope of the present research
Related skills and experience:
- Experience: graduate in law or in social science and at least 5 years experience
- excellent spoken and written Arabic, English and French
