Job Purpose Summary
This outreach activity is designed with the objective of monitoring and assisting in implementation of Back to School campaign (BTS) in pre-selected public schools in the Tripoli T5 area.
Key Responsibilities
As the Syrian crisis continues and growing numbers of Syrian children and youth seek refuge in Lebanon there is increasingly the need to address the issues of missed education and support children and youth to access education at their appropriate grade levels.
NRC Lebanon education response to the Syrian crisis is supportive of the Lebanese Ministry of Education decree which allows for integration of Syrian children into Lebanese schools. The NRC response strategy consists of four pillars; a) Contribute to a comprehensive education needs assessment; b) Standardization of the education response in line with the INEE Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies; c) Support integration of children and youth in schools d) Support to alternative education – non formal education opportunities (accelerated learning programme development, psycho-social and recreational support, and life skills) for both children and youth.
Education and protection needs for this refugee population remain a challenging gap across Lebanon. While the Lebanese Government had issued a decree to integrate all Syrian Refugee children in government schools, access to Lebanese schools continues to be a challenge due to overstretched capacity of these schools and differences in curriculum. No supportive measure has been planned by the Ministry in terms of teachers’ training or learning support activities for Syrian students. Previous assessments done by NRC revealed that despite the decision of integration, actual registration of Syrian students remains low, for several reasons: late arrival of the Syrian families in Lebanon (school year already started); lack of knowledge of Syrian mothers about the rights of their children in Lebanon (related to school fees, registration...); security fear of Syrian families to register the students; differences in curricula that make assessment and learning more difficult for Syrian children (especially in French and English); discrimination against Syrian children at school (teachers; peers) and access to school sometimes difficult (distance and security issues).
The outreach assistant will:
Supporting the Education Officer in implementation of educational activities
Responsible for: collecting, archiving and up-dating the data
Monitoring the educational activities conducted by NRC
Participating in school distribution
Monitoring the provision of transportation in 2nd shift schools
Report on a weekly basis to the Education Officer
Perform any other task as assigned by NRC management
Qualifications and Competences
Academic and Professional Qualifications
University level degree in education, social studies, or any other relevant field
Relevant Experience
Relevant experience in social and community engagement activities (data collection and community consultations).
Knowledge, Skills & Personal Attributes
Good communication and inter-personal skills
Fluent in English
Advanced computer skills, especially in Word, Excel, Power Point and Access
Experience as a social worker or as a teacher
Understanding of the education system in Lebanon
