BACKGROUND
Since the beginning of 2013, the increasing influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon due to the escalating violence and insecurity in Syria has resulted in a scale up of the response by UNICEF. In July 2012, Damascus witnessed confrontations between the rebels and the regime. These events were concentrated in the adjacent areas of Al Yarmouk Palestine refugee camp (the biggest camp in Syria with 180 thousand Palestinian refugees). A lot of Syrian refugees from the Yarmouk’s adjacent areas sought shelter into Yarmouk camp which became later the target for both the Syrian regime and the rebels. This tragic development pushed hundreds Palestinian families to flee into Lebanon.
As of November 2013, it is estimated that 50,700 Palestine Refugees from Syria (PRS) currently reside in Lebanon. Nearly half of the PRS are living in the South (31% in Saida and 17% in Tyre), 17% in the Beirut area, 14% in the North and 21% in Bekaa. The majority of PRS households are living inside camps across all areas. The influx of PRS is concentrated within large camps (Ein El-Helweh, Rashidiyeh, Beddawi and Nahr El Bared camp).
UNICEF is providing assistance to the Palestine refugees from Syria who have fled across the border into Lebanon in the areas of education, health, child protection, adolescents and water and sanitation.
To cope with the increasing numbers of the Palestine Refugees from Syria and to properly implement its regular and emergency activities, the Palestinian programme is in need for additional human resources to strengthen its response and ensure that the immediate needs of the PRS, especially children and women, are addressed.
