The Lebanon Reforestation Initiative is a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the US Forest Service (USFS) International Programs (IP).
The program operates as a partnership with Lebanese grassroots organizations and local communities to increase native tree reforestation and wildfire prevention in Lebanon by improving tree seedling production, planting practices and wildfire management. LRI is supporting reforestation in ten communities across Lebanon, with an additional two communities to be added in the fall of 2013.
The Program is currently seeking applicants for a Silviculture Extension Specialist position.
Main areas of responsibility (in coordination with Outplanting Component Manager):
- Coordinating outplanting activities in 12 LRI reforestation sites across the country
- Training planting workers in all sites and following on planting performance
- Taking in charge administrative and financial procedures related to the 12 sites, including budget projections, payments, field visit reports, progress reports, coordination with nurseries and seedling deliveries, etc.
Specific duties:
Lead outplanting activities, including:
communication with stakeholders and landowners, including municipalities and community members;
training personnel on technical aspects of outplanting and species-specific information,
coordinating planting activities with local communities, hired personnel and partner organizations;
provide technical assistance for hired personnel and forest guards in all sites;
Coordinate outplanting team activities and schedules
Assist in managing outplanting component budgets and preparing monthly projections
Support monitoring component with data and information as needed
Support the mapping team with technical information from the field needed for initial criteria development, preliminary site selection and further site follow up, LRI website, etc.
Support outreach and awareness team with technical information & material and community contacts
Maintain good communication with nursery specialist for strategic planning of activities and to ensure linkages between nurseries and outplanting communities
Coordinate seedling transportation from nursery to the field
Maintain clear records of all activities.
Qualifications and skills:
- BS or MS in agricultural engineering
- Experience working in the field and coordinating agricultural projects with local communities
- Strong reporting and computer skills
- Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic, both oral and written
- Strong team worker and communication skills
- Ability to adapt and work in different cultural environments
- Valid driving license and ability to drive
