Consultant To Draft A Best Practice Document

In the framework of the project “Let’s all go to school initiative“ funded by UNICEF, which aims to empower schools in Hermel and Akkar with the capacity and experience to plan and implement extracurricular activities for children using a child friendly approach, Mada is seeking a consultant to develop a publication on best practices and lessons learned, that will serve as a practical guideline for schools and organizations that wish to replicate this approach, enabling them to implement low cost extra-curricular activities for children in underprivileged areas. Responsibilities of consultant Review of project proposal, progress reports, success stories, etc… Undertake field visits to the schools in Akkar and Hermel and hold in depth interviews and focus groups with the stakeholders and targeted beneficiaries to document success stories and challenges of the project and take pictures for the publication. The consultant will document the meetings and focusgroups with the different stakeholders and beneficiaries and communicate them to Mada through a short report and list of interviewed persons. Undertake desk research and data review of relevant material related to extra-curricular activities and their positive effects on child development, academic performance and school environment. Undertake desk research and build a bibliography on (Arabic) material and manuals available on low cost extra-curricular activities Compile and select low cost activities and develop an activity manual that is practical and user friendly Draft the outline of the Best Practice documentation and submit it to Mada for approval Draft the final version of the Best Practice documentation Objective of document The document is intended to encourage and inspire school actors to integrate extra-curricular activities in the academic year, granting children their right to play, through presenting the best practices and lessons learned in the UNICEF funded project. The document is intended to serve as a practical guideline for schools and organizations that wish to replicate this approach, providing clear and easy to implement ideas of low cost extra-curricular activities for children, which are implementable even when funds are not available. Proposed Content Section 1: General chapter, context and importance of activities General introduction on the project and the objective of the publication Description of the current situation in public schools in Akkar and Hermel Highlighting the positive impact of extracurricular activities on child's development and academic performance as well as the added value to teachers, parents and the overall school climate, supported by academic references and literature Section 2: Best Practices and Lessons Learned Description of project, its objective, activities, methodology Challenges and lessons learned Results, impact and success stories Section 3: Manual with direct applicable of low cost activities Type of games and activities that can be applied in the classroom and school and the benefits of each type An overview of low cost activities, by category (psycho social – self reflection, Educational, Conflict management, recreational, Art, Sport, Environmental, etc…) This outline is tentative and will be discussed with the consultant and finalized accordingly. Expected Outputs / Deliverables A best practice document that serves as an effective and user friendly  guideline for schools and other organizations enabling them to organize low cost extracurricular activities for children Bibliography of available (Arabic) manuals, materials and tools to organize low-cost activities Field visits (interviews and focus groups) held and reports submitted

Mada is looking for a consultant with strong record in drafting studies, best practices and visibility documents on developmental and educational topics. Other skills required are:
- Strong research, documentation and writing skills
- Analytical and conceptual thinking
- Excellent social and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated competence in (online) research, data collection and analysis
- Experience in conducting interviews and focus groups in rural communities
- Knowledge of the public educational system in Lebanon and precisely in deprived rural areas in North Lebanon
- Knowledge of the developmental sector in Lebanon and experience in working with NGO's
- Computer: Office Pack
- Languages: Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in Arabic. English skills are an asset
- Good knowledge of the area and its local habits
- Ability to commit to deadlines and produce quality work in a short timeframe
