Function responsibilities
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters.
I. Scope of responsibilities
Implement mental health activities within the MSF mission
Carry out mental health assessment
Treat patients using psychotherapy and evaluate care given
Crucial role in supporting the integration of mental health care into health structures where MSF works
II. Mental health activities
Have a strong sense of neutrality, confidentiality and responsibility
Evaluate the psychological needs of the patient (inpatients and outpatients)
Diagnose psychological disorders using the ICD10
Define the best response (treatment and strategy) to answer these psychological needs
Refer patients to the psychiatrist if pharmacotherapy is needed
Conduct support groups and group therapy (if had a specialized training)
Refer patients to the social worker for any kind of medico-social support
Carry out psychological care (psychological support or psychotherapy) according to MSF protocols (that will be published soon)
Communicate with the psychiatrist important information about the patient in order to ensure a well coordinated treatment and support of the patient
Participate with the Health Promoter in creating educational material about mental health aiming at raising awareness in the community
Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and ensure communication of relevant information.
Attend and participate actively in clinical and medical meetings and community mental health events/activities and in the institutional supervision.
III. Training
Participate in the training of staff of health structure where MSF clinics are located
Increase awarness and train staff to the detection of psychological disorders and referring them to the psychologist
Play a role in training MSF staff in Mental health
IV. Public Relation
Set up, maintain and work with a mental health community network in collaboration with the social worker
V. Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting
Participate in the development of the plan of action
Actively monitor and report mental health activities (correctly fill registers, statistics and produce weekly and monthly reports).
Report immediately all important information linked to the clinical psychologist activities that should be communicate to the MTL
